  • My beloved dual 2.0 is almost dead-Has anyone received a CRU from AppleCare?

    First off…

…AppleCare has been spectacular. Two weeks ago my Version 1 G5 dual stopped functioning. Today, two logic boards and two replacement processors later, it appears that I will be looking at getting a CRU, or Consumer Replacement Unit. Apparently it takes three tries at one kind of part replacement to fail before Apple will consider this. Apple tells me that they generally replace “like for like” which I assume means that I am looking forward to a dual-core 2.0 (?). The problem of course is that I won’t be able to use my RAM, audio card, or FCP (according to the Genius at the Apple store- not without an upgrade anyway). I wonder has anyone had this experience? And if so, how did it pan out for you? Is there a way I could finagle a 2.7 (same RAM/PCI structure as my present unit, still in some stores)…?

We are about to go fibre channel, get a RAID, etc…what would you all do?

    Thanks pasture people-

I would take this opportunity to upgrade your equipment to PCIe, especially if you’re going fibre soon. If you go to PCIe now (with essentially a free computer) you won’t have to worry about this intel switch. You might drop a little dough right now, but when it comes time to get an intel box, all you have to do is swap out the computer and your hardware should be good to go.

If they give you a dual 2.7, well then no upgrading necessary.

FCP 4.5 will not work on the the new pcie/dual core machines.

    Make sense?

According to an article on MSNBC.com, Apple is supposed to make some new equipment announcements this coming Tuesday which may include new computers.

At the very least, we’re only 2 months away from NAB, I wouldn’t buy any new desktop computer from Apple until that event. They’ve never introduced a new desktop tower at NAB, but there’s a first time for everything.

I hear you Walter, but if his computer is dead, don’t you think he should jump on the PCIe bandwagon now? Apple’s going to give him a NEW computer.

Personally, I don’t want the last PowerPC machine when I make the switch to PCIe. I want the first Intel machine.

With all my video cards, Fibre cards, etc… all being PCI-X, if I were him, I would ask for a Dual 2.7 PCI-X machine. If I went with PCIe, it would cost me at least another $5 – $7k to upgrade all the other hardware. Not something I want to do right now, so I would go with the Dual 2.7.

Don’t mean to be a downer but are you certain “like for like” doesn’t mean Apple will be shipping a refurbished model of your current machine? I’ve very rarely encountered a manufacturer that will replace a machine of an earlier vintage with brand new hardware even under an extended warranty plan. If they do, great for you. The cynic in me says to expect the same model as what you currently have.
