I think what most of us want is a “throw-back” to the linear days of A-B roll editing where your timecode was always on-screen….in addition to a TC signal being pumped to external equipment. Like I said, I get this on my Mackie control surface via MIDI, with big bright red numbers, but we need Apple to give us other options. And the AJA solutions doesn’t work for me right now.

FCP5.5/6 is around the corner…can’t hurt to start making noise about this.

FYI, an easier way to do TC burn for clients is to NEST your sequence (which makes another sequence), rename it (“project TC burn”) and apply the TC generator to that!! You maintain RT and avoid the export step.

Like I’ve said in past posts, FCP is capable of this, but Apple needs to “unlock” it. Anyone who uses a Mackie control surface via Midi from FCP, enjoys a constant flow of timecode on the Mackie display!!! So this is not impossible if Apple WANTS it to happen.
I’m with you…I want to hit record on my deck and have it lock to FCP’s timeline! (Assemble mode of course). The last system I could do this with was the DPS Velocity.

The previous two suggestions are correct. I edit a 23 minute broadcast show here with 12 tracks of audio. Having the waveform on will definitely affect your workflow because FCP needs to draw and re-draw the timeline everytime the timeline is moved. RAM will help, but keeping it off until you need it is the way to go. I only use it for precision edits.

I’m not surprised. TV 101 always says to power up your external devices before your main brain.
I remember my days in a linear suite…it was always suggested that you turn on decks and other devices before the controller/computer. It can’t hurt…but I don’t see this issue either with my LH/KL-Box.

  • I can confirm the stretch. I edit a show in DV50 (SDX900/24p) and when I reverse play, I see the stretch. Not a big deal, but you’re not alone.

Go to System Preferences and Network Settings and check to see that “Kona Serial” is in the list. If so, you will need to double check your settings again in FCP. I haven’t tried this, but you can check the AJA VTR application too to see if it works as well.
It could be a bad cable too. Try swapping cables… the Keyspan interface you mentioned has its own cable.

You can do what my family does when they go to Jamaica…. buy a drive and wrap it up in a bunch of clothing. 🙂 sorry…had to throw that in there. I feel your pain.

    Thanks Bob…
Yeah…I already have the error codes from the hardware test, so I’m 90% sure its a board issue…unless I’m missing a trick. PRAM and SMU resets didn’t solve the issue either. I have 5 FW drives and a AJA IO that aren’t recognized. My local Apple guys need at least 3 or 4 days to diagnose and swap…I just don’t have that time now.

    Thanks again

[walter biscardi] “I’d still be running my 4 1/2 year old CineWave card if Pinnacle had kept the support. It still does things nothing else out there can do yet, like realtime support of Lossless+Alpha files in FCP.”

I’m right there with you man. I hate to think we’d have to relive what we went through with the OS9/OSX transition and the G4 to G5 transition. God help us all. 🙂

True…but they mentioned Aperture, which is basically now the “Pro” version of iPhoto.
He launched Adobe Photoshop to explain its slower yet functional speed under Universal…
And I seem to remember previous Expos where FCP was launched or demoed briefly, usually with a “pro” using it, not Steve Jobs. And they showed FCP Studio as a “ready in March” slide on the big screen.

    Hey, we’ll see.
