LH non-e and quads
Posted by Dave Snowdy on January 14, 2006 at 5:29 pmHurricane Katrina trashed most of our Cinewave breakout boxes. So, we decided to switch to Kona LH.
These went in standard G5s. Now the G5s are failing probably because of moisture exposure and we hope to get some quad cores.Do the new quads have the right bus for the LH non-e version?

January 14, 2006 at 6:21 pmNO – EVERY BOARD – AVID, ATTO, LSI Logic, Firmtek, Sonnet, AJA, Blackmagic, Cinewave, EVERY BOARD that could fit into a PCI-X machine CANNOT FIT into a PCI Express MAC. A Kona LHe is specifically designed for PCI Express machines. Same goes for your storage boards, etc. Don’t blame AJA – Apple did this to every manufacturer.

January 15, 2006 at 3:14 pmIf its technically possible, the new intel machines should REALLY have both PCI-X and PCIe slots. It would seem like it can be done if they can have PCI and PCI-X in the same box. I highly doubt Apple will make PCI-X Intel machines later this year.
Any thoughts? I’m not technically savvy on this front, but it doesn’t seem like a hard thing to do, does it?

January 15, 2006 at 3:34 pmwho cares if it’s possible – there are many things that are possible – LIKE ADDING 2 MORE SLOTS INSIDE THE MAC – but Apple does not want to do it. TO my knowlege, the Intel machines will be PCI Express only – PCI-X will die, and so will your investment (not that you can’t keep using your old hardware – people still make MAJOR MOVIES with old AVID Meridian systems, but these $80,000 systems are dead in the water as far as new technology is concerned).

No, just order the Dual 2.7 G5 which is the only remaining PCI-X G5 left.

January 16, 2006 at 10:20 pmGlad to hear… I could possibly keep 1 or 2 G5s running that could use the 2 Kona LH cards I’ve bought so far. Then just buy LHe cards for any Quads we get.
Would that be a better long-term decision, Apple-wise? When choosing hardware and decide between equipment, I usually try to choose the things that will serve us 6 months to a year longer, if lucky :=).

January 17, 2006 at 12:27 amthere are no long term decisions. The Intel based MAC’s are coming, like it or not. Will they use PCI Express – probably – will the existing line of PCIe cards work? Maybe? Who knows – Steve Jobs – why don’t you call him and ask him, and let us know.
These products are cheap, and you should be able to make your money back pretty quickly. Just be prepared to either keep them, or buy new.
Remember, old AVID Meridian systems still make money.

I’d still be running my 4 1/2 year old CineWave card if Pinnacle had kept the support. It still does things nothing else out there can do yet, like realtime support of Lossless+Alpha files in FCP.
I have resisted the temptation to purchase any PCIe based equipment as my Dual 2.0’s are cranking right along earning money and have instead concentrated on updating all the other video and audio hardware in the shop.

I’m right there with you man. I hate to think we’d have to relive what we went through with the OS9/OSX transition and the G4 to G5 transition. God help us all. 🙂
