And granted, if you do weddings and web based videos, have fun!!
For me as a mainly broadcast and corporate producer… FCPX is useless. FCP7 still pays the bills.

I agree…. good discussion, but no need to get personal.
Anyone who’s gone through the FCP growing pains from version 1, knows this is a BAD release. I would have waited. No need to spend $300 on software that should have improved upon a previous version, only to dig into your pockets again for workaround software. We’ve been down that road with earlier releases. -
[James Poll] “All they’ll care about is making sure that it’s super-easy for Johnny Amateur to upload his self-important video about head lice to YouTube.”
LOL!!!! Quote of the day!
Wasn’t aware of the “old vs. new” debate, but if newbie editors wanna play with the big boys, that will soon realize FCPX is not the tool.

I would argue that it’s more than 10% of the installed user base when you consider the amount of post houses that use FCP as their main workflow not to mention Filmmakers, News Organizations and other high volume broadcast facilities, etc…
When you add the word “Pro” to your package and include “Pro” features in 7 versions of your software, then strip them out in the name of revolution, you deserve the backlash from the “pro” community that still need “pro” features…aka, the basics!
To quote a review I read, they could have saved themselves a headache and just called this FCEX.
To your point, modular is fine… I think the interface is attractive, but it lacks the features we need.
I’m an Apple fan and hope they can fix this.

Great way to look at this!! As a Logic user, I would have to agree with you, with fingers crossed!

June 12, 2009 at 4:32 am in reply to: 1080 24p workflow – seeking advice to get the mostLeave it checked. As far as how to shoot, I don’t have the technical explaination, or at least someone on this forum can probably explain it better than I can. Check the FCP manuals tho… they do a good job explaining the settings in FCP for various HD formats.

I use my 15″ to edit when I’m away from the office. And I transfer footage from my RAIDs to my G-minis or WD Passports. While I can finish projects on the laptop with this setup, the real finishing happens on the MacPro/AJA setup back in the office.
The magic combo is to give people options. I haven’t had a need for the ExpressBus on my laptop yet since I opt for smaller portable storage (preferably bus powered), but to remove it all together is not good. The 15″ and 17″ models should have an Express config to keep the “pro” title. No argument from me on that. Flexibility and multiple I/O make the MBPro a “Pro”.
As for the 17″ debate…. if it’s not your main edit machine, I agree it’s way too big. Pretty, but too big.

Exactly… I posted in another forum, anyone who’s been using FCP since version 1 has been through the upgrade pains, especially when FCP is released before a major OS upgrade. Bug City!!!
I’ll wait for Apple to get it right! New OS, New Quicktime, do you REALLY want and new FCS now??I have two working systems, I’m in no rush. I can’t afford the downtime trying to figure out workarounds because QT X can’t render a dissolve properly.

I agree with both. If you’re doing “high end” video, chances are you’re on a MacPro anyway.
But I’ve been one to take my 15″ MacBook Pro in the field for on-set digitizing, etc.. but the FW800 is plenty fast. I never imagined hooking up a super RAID to my laptop. At the very least Apple should make this an option. Even for me the 17″ was overkill when I have two perfectly running Edit suites. I usually offload to G-mini’s and go on the road. I have yet to use the Express Port on my 15″

June 9, 2009 at 1:20 pm in reply to: 1080 24p workflow – seeking advice to get the mostI just shot a multicam docu-reality style show….2 HVX200’s, 1080/24p.
Since this is for network, my workflow was to import everything natively (I also have SD, and 720p footage to mix in) and setup my AJA presets to 1080/29.97. FCP and AJA process everything in realtime. If you have the storage space, just import and go. DVCPRO HD is a very nice codec to work with and doesn’t require the fastest drives on earth to get decent performance. I use AJA cards, but if you’re working without external hardware, just setup FCP to capture DVCPROHD and set your sequence to the same. There should be a preset.
