I’ll answer this as a non-audio guy. I’ve done this workflow as an editor and haven’t had any issues.
You definitely want to make sure you’re editing and mastering at 48k all around. Not quite sure why you would use different sample rates, but I’m 95% sure that’s the source of your problem.

Duh!!! already put it in 3. I’ll test it out and let you know. Still installing software.
One thing I noticed is the Express Bus Utility isn’t needed for the new MacPro’s.
I remember a bunch of posts last year that mentioned configuring the speed of each bus…or something like that. No longer an issue now.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks Bob… yes I do have the BSG… so I’m good to go.
I’ll research the menu setting before I get the deck… or maybe the rental house can get that all set up for me. Appreciate the info.

    Thank you too, Paul.

[DPB Branner] “So I thought. But the only card I can see that costs this price is the X800, and I cannot find it for sale new anywhere on-line; the salesperson said it’s usually a 6 month wait. ATI shows it no longer available.

    Do you know better?

Nope, unfortunately. Maybe used on eBay? Like I said earlier, when I was FINALLY able to purchase it, it took 3 weeks to deliver. ATI didn’t even have them in stock. And from what I understood this wasn’t a format they would continue to produce now that PCIe is here. Happy hunting.
Maybe you’ll have more luck with an nVidia?? I’ve only used ATI so I cant speak to performance experience.

[DPB Branner] “2) Upgrade cards that are readily available and will work with this machine and software are unreasonably expensive. “

Follow the COW… we got your back.
$300 for a new card… or $5000 for a nicely configured MacPro. All depends on what you’re working with. For me it was projects on deck and waiting to see what Apple had up their sleeves. It was easier to to buy a $300 gfx card, install it in 20minutes, and continue my projects while learning Motion and Color which take advantage of the horse power– not to mention After Effects, Combustion, and other software that could use the new power! The flipside is $5000+ for a new Mac, $1000+ for a new Kona board, new PCIe boards for my harddrives and possible 2-3 days of downtime while I install and test new hardware and software.

    3) The existing ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card will work, if slowly, and I should just use that until I can upgrade to a new machine.

Depends on your time frame. Again, the 9600 is underpowered for FCS2, but it will work. Color needs a bigger card…I couldn’t launch it without modifying the “minsys” file…and even then it was VERY sluggish.

[DPB Branner] “Any sense about which of the two graphics cards is more effective with this set-up? The Apple rep suggested that I buy a GeForce 6600 card, but he sounded very unsure and I have the feeling that better options must be available.”

Its a matter of preference in my option. I’ve always liked and stuck with ATI.
Whatever you get, make sure it has a minimum of 64MB on board so you can run Motion and Color. (i think that’s the minimum, check the FCS specs). More importantly, PCI-X cards are getting harder to find. It took 3 weeks for ATI to send my card…and almost every store I called were sold out and didn’t anticipate re-stocking. B&H in NYC had a few ATI cards on their website, but when I called, the guy said they were actually sold out…and no idea about re-stock. So Good Luck on that front. Not sure if you’ll have the same trouble with the GeForce, but clearly the industry has moved on to PCIe.
