I’m still running two dual 2Ghz G5’s. I want to upgrade, but I haven’t had the time or opportunity…maybe this summer.

In either case with all of the latest updates to both OS and software, FCS2 runs perfectly!
Both of my machines are running after market cards. I upgraded one card to the ATI X800 after putting my Mac Pro purchase on hold, and my other machine runs an ATI9800.
The graphics card is key like Tom said to running Motion and Color. I had an ATI 9600 and Color would not launch…Motion was sluggish, but it worked.

Its a no brainer, a 3GHz Mac Pro is going to run circles around a G5 when it comes to rendering and other heavy processing, but as an editor, FCP, Soundtrack, and Livetype work as fast as you can push the buttons. Compressor, Motion and Color will work as fast as your processor and GFX card.

February 9, 2008 at 1:48 am in reply to: TC window from AJA Card!!! Did I miss this??

Now that I’ve over used this feature today (LOL….and a producer today said, wow! timecode, great!!) A follow up question is, can this signal be sent down a RS422 line?? or is it only a video output? Sadly I returned my rental too fast and couldn’t check.

    Thanks

[gary adcock] “it has been hidden since the 3.1 driver I think.
did you note that you can generate TC, use the QT code or change the TK burn in to show alternate frame rates ( rates from 24 – 60 fps are available)

guess what- there is a pref panel that can be accessed also….

the DS Keying function can be used to show a bug onscreen, as stills or motion…

HAHAHA…wisenheimer! Yes I knew every and anything about the preference panel other than the fact that TC works with FCP!

Now that I know this, yes, I just discovered the alternate frame rate output which is cool. Thanks

Thanks Jeremy…I definitely missed it. I knew you could get TC from the QT file, but I MISSED this little FCP feature! What a time saver!

February 8, 2008 at 3:30 pm in reply to: Phantom-Power Not Compatible With The Kona LHe?

I just replaced my cables recently with 1/4″ to XLR to avoid this problem. I read a post a while ago about this. I figure better safe just running thru 1/4″ on my Mackie than trying to figure out whether or not phantom power is going to destroy my card.
As a habit I keep phantom power off when I don’t need it.

It can be done, but it takes FOREVER!! Not ideal in a live shooting situation. Better off with the P2 Store or PowerBook. It would be nice to see higher capacity P2 Stores or the ability to swap out the drives now that we have 32GB cards.

December 16, 2007 at 3:26 pm in reply to: DVD-RAM cartridge

Thanks anyway. DVD-R option is too late. We wrapped on the shoot two weeks ago. So I have the DVD-RAM’s in house now.
It was recorded on a Fostex 824 (??). Hopefully I won’t need them if the mix is ok. I have about 20 DVD-RAM’s.

I agree with Walter. The most instability I’ve seen was going from OS9 to OS10 with Cinewave.
That forum was FULL of workarounds. OS10 and AJA is easily the most stable setup to date under MOST of the “dot” updates too.

10.5 can wait in my book. This is a major update and anyone who’s been running FCP since at least version 2 knows to wait and not rush into these upgrades. And as far as the Adobe debate, they’re the least of our problems. Any FCP system doing broadcast or most high end work is using apps other than Apple and Adobe.

I hoped to upgrade my 2 G5 systems before Xmas, but now I think I’ll wait till ’08.
If it ain’t broke, leave it alone. And if it is, you should find someone to troubleshoot, fix and configure your system. In 2007, no one should be pulling cards out of their systems! LOL
(I just had a DPS Velocity flashback)!!!

November 7, 2007 at 9:13 pm in reply to: Best Way to Post DVCPRO50 Video

I’ve been delivering network shows from DV50 for 3 years now.
I capture all DV50 material via SDI using the Kona–>DVCPRO50 codec (preset).
No sense in wasting drive space, I don’t see a difference either way.

I have yet to fail a QC.

Uncompressed makes sense if you have a lot of graphics, but the footage can stay at DV50 in my opinion. You can mix res in the TL now, so this isn’t an issue.
