What do you mean by “hits” exactly? One tip is to NOT use 2-pass encoding. It produces noticeably worse results than single pass. Are you talking macroblocking?

“I’m going to pop over to a local mac retailer (no store here, Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada)”
A good piece of advice from a longtime FCP cutter/Mac user in Halifax: avoid the local authorized dealer like the plague. I’ve dealt with so many clients that have been burned with supposedly “preconfigured” systems with incompatible third-party hardware that are nothing but problems. And once they have your money, they don’t return calls. I’ve made a lot of money off their incompetence.
There is a dealer in Dartmouth, however, that I’ve heard good things about. But what I’d recommend is ordering directly from Apple. That way you can customize (add RAM, bigger HD, etc) and nobody touches it but Apple.
Or, go to Future Shop! I’ve saved so much money buying their extended care coverage. I’ve had a three year old external CD burner and a four year old LCD monitor (not to mention a few printers) replaced with BRAND NEW units. It’s great coverage for electronics. I would DEFINITELY buy an Apple monitor there, at least, and nowhere else.

Can you insert graphic elements into Title 3D? What if you need logos, etc? Off to PhotoShop or AE then?

Yes, I’ve noticed this too and it drives me nuts.

[Mark Raudonis] “What he means is that firewire drives are notoriously unreliable and prone to crash just when you can least afford it… like now when you’re at the end of the project.
Firewire drives are NOT recommended for use with FCP by Apple (even though everyone uses them). Your experience is exactly why Apple says “don’t do it”.”
Not much choice, sometimes, if you’re working from a Powerbook eh?

Yes, you can remount the drive and try taking just the render files offline first (add a space into the render files folder name) and/or try the same with individual media files, each time relaunching the project with another file or bunch of files offline until you’re able to narrow it down. I haven’t had to do this for a long time, but the method (adding a space into the beginning of the file’s name) should still be valid.
If the project launches fine when you take the render files offline, I’d just delete the whole bunch of them and re-render anything you need.

It was actually a windoze user that told me this, a salesperson at Best Buy. The topic wasn’t Apple. He said that Microsoft is offering XP home edition for free to promote the MS operating system. Maybe his brain was fried, then???

Somebody told me Windows XP can be downloaded for free from Microsoft. Is this true? I can’t find it on the microsoft site.

[MitchJi] “2. To meet this spec a lot of equipment adds 7.5 (DVD players for example). So if you create a DVD from your material it won’t be correct.”
I believe digital is always 0 IRE. The playback device (in this case, a DVD player) adds setup for analogue playback.
NTSC monitoring is essential whether you have setup added or not.
