replace edit in timeline
Posted by Accountclosedduetonorealnameused on April 12, 2006 at 8:35 pmI will be editing mainly rendered clips in my FCP sequences. I will need to replace shots in the sequence with re-rendered clips. I am wondering, is there a way to replace the clip in the timeline, but keep any transitions and heads/tails? (the heads and tails timing is preserved)
Kind of like how you would do a replace footage in After Effects (option/Alt drag onto clip)
I am aware that I can reconnect media, but reconnect media will replace ALL the instances of the shot in the project, not just in the sequence I am working in. (I do want to keep old versions of timelines as-is)
thanks, hope this makes sense.

Not sure what you mean by that, but does the replace edit function not work for you?

April 13, 2006 at 2:09 pmsorry for not being clear. no, replace won’t work here.
Let me explain more clearly.
Lets say I have 3 clips, CLIP A, CLIP B and CLIP C on a timeline.
CLIP A has a transition to CLIP B
CLIP B has a transition to CLIP C
additionally, CLIP B has 5 frames of head and 10 frames of tail.
Now, CLIP B is a rendered CG shot that I want to replace the content of the clip, but preserve the head (5 frames) and tails (10 frames) and also not change the transitions. Is there a way to do this.
Now if you are familiar with After Effects, this is the same functionality as option (or Alt on a PC) draging a new clip from the project window to a clip on the timeline you want to replace. the heads/tails and all attributes are preserved.
I do commercial work on a smoke usually and this is something I do 100 times a day and is pretty straight forward on the smoke, I am hoping it is even easier on FCP, forgive me for the long explanation.

Sorry, I don’t believe this is possible.

Yes it is.
Replace Edit will execute its function with transitions intact. I do it all the time. This is with version 5.0.4.
I did find what appears to be a repeatable problem (at least on my system running 5.0.4) in testing this case, though.
I found that if you are on the first frame of the clip and want to Replace Edit from that frame, you get an “Insufficient Content” warning even though there is plainly enough media ahead of the playhead.
Replace Edit works in all other instances.
BUG? Can others test this please?
This is problematic for the pro editor since in many cases we use Replace Edit from the first frame.

April 13, 2006 at 7:52 pmAnother way to do this, if I understand you correctly, is to select the new clip in the browser, COPY, then PASTE ATTRIBUTES on the old clip in the timeline. Choose CONTENT, and you should find that all your transitions and filters have stayed, but the clip has been updated.
BTW, I don’t understand what Replace Edit is. I’ve never used it, nor can I find this function. anyone care to explain this to me?

April 13, 2006 at 8:00 pmThe paste content function has been broken in some versions of the application.
The replace function is extremely powerful in many ways, especially with ganging. It’s a function in the edit overlay, has a button in the canvas, and uses the shortcut F11. It replaces the current frame in the canvas with the frame in the viewer, taking its duration from the clip on the correctly auoselected track. Try it. It’s a great tool.

April 13, 2006 at 8:35 pmYou don’t know Replace Edit?
Duuuuuuuude………You want the football to hit Jerry Rice’s forearms right on the downbeat of the Monday Night Football theme, but you can’t get the timing just right?
Place the playhead in the Viewer in the place where the football hits Jerry’s forearms.
Place the playhead in the Timeline on the place where the downbeat hits.
F11 and you have re-synched action and sound.I would say that most self-trained editors simply don’t “get” Replace Edit. You pretty much some decent training to show you how cool it is and in how many instances you can use it.
Avid guys are just as bad. So many times I’ve heard, “Oh, I never use the blue splicer. I’m not sure how it works.”
Ouch…..
Power editors rely on Replace Edit.
So Tom, do you see this little bug?

April 13, 2006 at 8:52 pmNice. Very nice. In all the years I’ve been editing, I’ve always placed a marker on my source clip and a marker in my music to sync up. It’s nice to know that there is another way to do this. I do find it annoying, however, that you do get the “Insufficiant content for edit” message when placing your head on the first frame of the clip. It seems that the extra steps to correct this makes the feature not worth it for my to change how I currently edit, unless I have missed something here.

April 13, 2006 at 10:04 pmYeah, Match Frame-Replace is a FCP equivalent of Mortal Combat key-combos or something.
