ok, so I figured this out. Seems when you have the play head over the first frame of a clip in the timeline, and hit replace, what you actually think is the first frame (ON the transition) FCP thinks is the last frame of the clip before. So you get this message. If you do the replace edit command layer in on a clip, you will not get the insufficient media error.

and yes, replace edit is great!

[Varangian] “Seems when you have the play head over the first frame of a clip in the timeline, and hit replace, what you actually think is the first frame (ON the transition)”

Replace Edit is broken when a transition is applied.

I’m definitely on the first frame of the incoming shot. I see the Overlay that states that I am on the first frame, I should be able to do a Replace Edit right there whether there is a transition there or not. As it works now, when there is a transition there I get a warning. If there is no transition there, I don’t get a warning and it works as expected. Broken.

[Varangian] “FCP thinks is the last frame of the clip before”
    Yes. That’s exactly the case.

[Kevin Hedin] ” I’ve always placed a marker on my source clip and a marker in my music to sync up”
    That’s what I call the “sissy’s” way. 😉

[Kevin Hedin] “I do find it annoying, however, that you do get the “Insufficiant content for edit” message when placing your head on the first frame of the clip”
It only happens when you have a transition there.

[Kevin Hedin] ” makes the feature not worth it for my to change how I currently edit, unless I have missed something here”

    You have missed something.
Replace Edit is very powerful and YES, you should change the way you edit if it improves your workflow. Never stop learning is my credo.

You do need to do a Replace Edit from the first frame when there is a transition there from time to time, but that is only one scenario. More often than not, you use Replace Edit on other frames in the clip – usually in the case like I’ve described above
