Hi John,
I’m no expert on RAIDS but can answer one of your questions, as far as your scratch disk is concerned the answer is yes, it should be on a separate drive to your boot drive (main hard drive). Your project files; which are tiny, you can hold on your boot drive.
As far as which RAID to get, I would search this forum out as this is a question that’s often asked, just yesterday I was reading a similar posting which someone replied to and gave advice on RAID set up.
Oh and even without a RAID set up, you’ll be cooking on gas with your 8 core and 16gb RAM, I’m jealous!
good luck and happy holidays

When you say exporting for QTime I’m assuming you’re not using compressor?
If so have you checked the settings thoroughly? As it may be using its own markers.
If it’s appropriate use compressor, it’s so much more flexible and is not that complex once you get into it.

If you have VLC video player, this bit of software will also convert to a variety of formats, not sure it’ll do pro res but it will convert to .mov which you’ll then be able to take into FCP.
VLC is free and if you google it you’ll be able to download the latest version and then if you go to youtube and put in video converting with vlc, you’ll come across a video tutorial which will help you do this.
good luck.

I bought a quad core and sometimes as I stare at the machine rendering a video effect, I sigh wistfully and wish I got an 8 core. It’s my humble opinion that if you’re going to get all the RAID stuff and you’re going to be doing loads of motion effects and stuff then just bite the bullet and get the 8 core it costs more, but so does buying a 4 core then replacing it with an 8 because you need it.
good luck.

Amir is right, if you’re not going to use it that much get an imac, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, buy cheap, buy twice. If you’re going to use FCP properly you’ll need a Mac Pro.

Mmm, my moto on this is buy cheap, buy twice. You could get an imac and editing hd footage you’ll realise almost immediately that it isn’t good enough.
You need at least 4 gb RAM and two internal drives, try and get a used 4 core or 8 core mac pro, I don’t know what country you’re in but I know that second hand prices for these should have come down a bit as Apple have brought out a successor to the Pro.
If you buy an iMac for FCP 6, I guarantee you’ll regret it when you’re sitting there staring at it rendering for all it’s worth and hardly making any progress.

Try exporting your sequence to compressor and using the web settings, I would use the H.264 800kps streaming setting, you can also mess around with the settings and hit save and it will become one of your custom settings, which you can use again; don’t forget to rename.
Don’t forget that Final Cut, down converts your footage to the lowest res you’re using, so if you have xdcam, hdv and dv, then FCP will down convert everything to dv, so that’s the quality you’ll be working with.
good luck.
