  • Novice to FCP – which RAID configuration?

Posted by John Mallidis on December 23, 2009 at 11:02 am

    Hello world!

I got a MacPro (8 core, 16GB ram) and I am learning FCP.
If I install something such a G-Tech’s G-SPEED eS PRO RAID should I use it as a scratch disk for faster editing or as a place to save projects or both?

I am so confused: Should the scratch disk/s be on a separate drive than the operating system’s and program’s drive? If yes, then should I install an internal RAID card for the drives inside the MacPro (the ones with MacOs and FCP) and another one for the external RAID of G-Tech?

On other words: Which is the ideal configuration for a HD video editing MacPro? How many RAIDs I should ideally have?

Oh, I am such a novice that I can not even express my question properly…

Season’s greetings to you all! 🙂

    Hi John,

I’m no expert on RAIDS but can answer one of your questions, as far as your scratch disk is concerned the answer is yes, it should be on a separate drive to your boot drive (main hard drive). Your project files; which are tiny, you can hold on your boot drive.

As far as which RAID to get, I would search this forum out as this is a question that’s often asked, just yesterday I was reading a similar posting which someone replied to and gave advice on RAID set up.

Oh and even without a RAID set up, you’ll be cooking on gas with your 8 core and 16gb RAM, I’m jealous!

    good luck and happy holidays

    Hi Roli!
    Thanks for the prompt response.
My question should probably be: Is a one (1) RAID enough to store work AND use it as a scratch disk at the same time?
Then: An external RAID e.g. a RAID 5 will keep me safe enough from a possible disk failure. Should I also RAID the internal drives for safety purposes?
About RAID choice I will get the G-Tech one. I ‘ve sen them all in IBC at Amsterdam this fall and the G-Tech looks very robust and carefully designed. The question is “how to use it”?
Happy holidays to you to Roli.
    John

    That’s cool John,

As I said I’m no RAID expert but if you read this post https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/200/884114 it might give you a bit more insight as to where to go with your RAID set up.

I don’t have a RAID set up yet because I don’t need one and don’t have the cash, but I’m sure the time will come soon and I’ll be interested to see how you got on.
