Use a property mapper that goes from full-screen, dark gray to full-screen, white for the duration that you want your particles to grow. Ensure that this is done in a precomp.
Then just link scale to this property mapper.

I would assume that the Canopus CODEC for Edius Pro3 has Alpha Channel support. Just ensure that you select RGB+Alpha in the Output Module with Straight Alpha Channel.
Your other option is to render a 32-bit TGA sequence.

Argh! Forget about my previous post. Wha tyou can do is try not to click on the Collapse Transform switch. If that is not possible, then you can always copy the light layers in the precomp and paste it into the higher level composition.
Thereafter, you will want to switch the ‘original’ lights so that AE doesn’t calculate it twice.
