Hi Mylennium, while I agree that there are better tools out there to optimize GIF animations, I have not had a problem with outputting to GIFs directly from AE.

It’s been about 5 years since I did a GIF animation. I recall setting up the project as per normal, other than the comp size. It was only in the Output Module that I set the output to GIF. Off course no fields would be good in the Render Module.

BTW, you can include a still image of the animaiton within your posts here at the COW.

Ensure that you have the latest QuickTime and the Avid DV CODEC installed. Also, try rendering to another QT CODEC to see if this will work. If all else fails and time is an issue, then use the QT DV CODEC. ANd if that also fails, then use TGA sequences. They play fine on NLEs.

Your biggest issue with GIFs is color banding and file size (bandwidth considerations). But I have no idea why your animation is grainy. It’ll be good if you can provide a link to the GIF animation.

You may need to finetune your memory settings to purge your buffer more frequently.

Press the Shift key and mouse over to the menu to select Preferences. Keep the Shift key down at all times. Select Preferences with the Shift key still down. Once you’re in the preferences dialog, select the drop-down menu, if you are still holding the Shift key down, you will see an option for Secret (or Scheret – depending on the version of AE). Release the Shift key and select the aforementioned preference.

In its dialog window, set memory to purge every 5 frames. Restart AE and give the render another go. Your last option, if the above fails, is to set AE to purge its memory buffer each frame – value of 1.

If all of these fail, then you may have some plugin issues. So let us know what plugins you have that may cause this issue. You’ll want to check the Websites of the plugins that you own to see if they have updated versions.

It looks like you’ve not set Card Dance to encompass the size of your image. This explains why your cards only appear in the middle of your image. The setting in question is one of those at the top, in the Effects Control Window. Sorry, but I don’t have AE on this machine so I’m not able to give you the specific parameter to look at.

You should get a pretty good idea what’s causing the problem by looking at the load-up messages as AE starts up. When AE initializes, it goes through a loading sequence. You can see this on the start up screen. Make a note of the last item being loaded. It should be the one that is stalled. Let us know which one it is.
