Filip’s got his point – thanks Filip, that put some sense into something I was trying to suss out over on this end. I had a feeling that something was wrong with using the Light Transmission for reflection purposes. It’s actually fine as long as the camera doesn’t do an orbital move. Straight on moves and 15-30 degree camera moves are quite alright but anything more and things go wacky.

And as for the recipe, by all means send it over but Yellowtails are hard to come by. They’re only widely available here as Sashimi. But Seabass, ehmmm … those are great for steaming, ala Chinese style. I’ll see if I can

Kathlyn would readily welcome your recipe too. I hear that Ron’s working up quite an appetite for fish these days – over to you Ron … .

Cheers dude! Great tutorial and keep up the great work. Imust say that being here from the early days, we’ve seen lots of folks come and go and each and every one has been a blessed addition to the COW. I just hope that those that visit us here are just as appreciative of the work that’s come on since, day ZERO-ONE.

I knda miss the inputs from Rick Gerard, Mark Simpson, Philip Hodgetts, and David Bogie. Argh!, I reminisce too much. But it’s been great seeing you guys contributing as much as you have.

But I’m still curious to know what you’d do/how you’d feel if you caught the same fish twice.

This is a job for scripting and not Expressions. You may want to do a Google for “After Effects” and scripts. It doesn’t sound like something too tricky but I’ve not ventured into scripting – so … .

[Andrew Kramer] “Perhaps the master Dan Ebberts could create an expression linking a light with a camera and making them orbit around an object, always opposite of each other so that the “light transmission” will “face” the camera. But I can’t think of a way it would perform like reflections do. Please let me know if I’m mistaken. I wish creating reflections WAS easier.”

Dan actually helped me out with some Expression for creating reflections in broadcastGEMs’ AE Pro Series Volume01. It works quite similar to yours – with the ramp for the falloff etc except that ours built-in some other features for scale etc. But I thought I may have an alternative for a future product version.

Once you’ve got the light, camera and layer in place, you can link the camera’s POI to the text layer’s position and then parent the light to the camera. Don’t know if this is true reflection but it does get the reflection in front, towards the camera at all times. I still like both methods though. At times I kinda prefer using ramp to create the falloff on a duplicate layer cos’ it looks more obvious and has easier controls for the reflection.

As for the fish, I sure hope that it’s edible.

What’s happening with Andrew’s Adjustment Layer is that it is a 2D Layer. Placing it between 2 individual or groups of 3D layers results in each group being rendered seperately instead of at one go. This is true for all 2D layers and not just Adjustment Layers. A 3D Adjustment Layer will not affect the render pipeline. HTH.

Dude, give it a shot. I know what you’re alluding to. The solution(s) I’ve provided has worked for me, many times. If all else fails, then you can always use Premiere’s Flicker Removal which does a much better job than AE’s rendition. And if all of these fail, then add some Channel Blur. It’s all about getting rid of the interlace flickers and, I am assuming that you may also have, chroma crawl artefacts

Use Levels to reduce the the blacks and whites by about 10%. Reducing opacity by about 10% will also help. Add some motion blur.

I’ve only tested one uprezzing software and that’s Instant HD. It’s not magic but it’s ok for most stuff. Where it fails and I expect where others will also fail is with graphics with alpha channels. On live video, they should be fine. And Instant HD works only with progressive frames. If you have interlaced footage, then you’ll need to convert them to progressive first. The Instant HD manual covers this step. You may also want to look at digital anarchy’s Resizer plugin. And then there’s one from algolith although they never replied to my enquiries on receiving a demo version.
