Render settings for website
Posted by Sanjay Chalisey on July 21, 2006 at 2:26 pmHello,
I’ve made a simple sequence in After Effects which is to be added onto our website.
Has to be a looping file; problem is that when I make a looping Gif from AE, the finished video when uploaded onto our site looks ‘grainy’.
Would appreciate help on how to avoid this problem, and the ideal render settings that should be applied for producing animated gifs.
Thanks very much in advance.

July 21, 2006 at 2:41 pmYour biggest issue with GIFs is color banding and file size (bandwidth considerations). But I have no idea why your animation is grainy. It’ll be good if you can provide a link to the GIF animation.

July 21, 2006 at 2:44 pmThanks for your reply Roland.
We can’t ‘go live’ with this in its current state.
Just out of interest, what settings would you apply?
I normally work to video production standard and seldom do any web-related work, hence the need for help!
Thanks.

July 21, 2006 at 2:47 pmIt’s been about 5 years since I did a GIF animation. I recall setting up the project as per normal, other than the comp size. It was only in the Output Module that I set the output to GIF. Off course no fields would be good in the Render Module.
BTW, you can include a still image of the animaiton within your posts here at the COW.

July 21, 2006 at 3:47 pmNever ever produce GIFs directly from AE!!! They will look shabby no matter how you tweak your settings. Render your banner out as a *.mov and import that file into Image Ready. Adjust and optimize your file there, including color palette and reduction of redundant frames.

July 21, 2006 at 3:52 pmHi Mylennium, while I agree that there are better tools out there to optimize GIF animations, I have not had a problem with outputting to GIFs directly from AE.

July 23, 2006 at 6:15 amI have made a great deal of gif animations. I use AE, then export it in an image sequence, chose tiff. save it to a file, then Import it into image ready, fix it up a bit if needed from there. It works like a charm.
