Your audio issues sounded very similar to issues that users used to have. That gave me the impression that you were not using more recent versions of AE and QT. You can try upgrading AE to 5.5.1.

Do you have audio on the timeline? If you do set it to low quality using the layer switches. You will then need to update either AE or QuickTime. Let us know what versions of AE and QuickTIme you’re running and on which platform.

I would suggest that you first look at your workflow. A 1 hour+ timeline in AE isn’t always required. See if you can ppeform some of the task in an editing application and only use AE for multi-layered, compositing-like functions.

More RAM would be good for you.

Card Dance will not rpelicate the layers for you. What it does is to break up what you already have. best bet would be a particle system such as Particle Playground or Trapcode’s Particular. Trapcode’s Echospace should also do the trick. I suggest that you download their trial versions and give it a go.
