Hey guys….ever since FCP 3.0 I have simply renamed my app file….Final Cut Pro becomes Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. Then I load the new version….still have the old version. Works for the entire suite. I have Motion 2 and 3 on the same G5. Final Cut Pro versions 3 all the way to version 6…all running fine, all plug ins intact. I always do this to be sure I can do what Walter does with the older version if I have to, but I don’t have to reboot.

Hmmm, not sure why it is so easy, but a reboot drive is not necessary….again, I’m on G5’s still so I don’t have experience using this method on an intel.

Just rename the app file before installing the new version!!!!

One tip is to add the version number after the application file for all the Studio Apps. Final Cut Pro becomes Final Cut Pro 5.1.2, etc. This way the Studio 2 install will simply create a new app file, rather than blow away the old one. Now you can still use the older version with all your plugins and move into the new version when it suits you. Also lets you do a thorough troubleshoot before moving up. Be sure to clone your hard drive right before install. We run FCStudio 2 on Dual 2.7 G5s and all is well. Rockin actually.

Or you can get a Convergent Designs M1 box that takes the HDMI and makes an HD SDI with embedded audio and takes the firewire and converts it to RS422 machine control. Works very well with our M25U deck.

Here’s a better tip. BEFORE you install any FCStudio upgrade, simply add the version number to all the studio apps filenames. Final Cut Pro becomes Final Cut Pro 5.1.2. Do this to all of them….if you like A.Pack and want to save it, take it out of the Apps folder…..the new install likes to blow it away. Now when you install it you will have all your plug ins, all your presets etc, AND you will have all previous versions on the same system. I have FCP 3.0, 4.5, 5.0.4, 5.1.2 and 6.0 on the same G5. If I am working with a client who is working in 5.0.4 and they give me a file I can still work with it without updating to a new version they cannot use. Works perfectly.

Three systems just like it and have been doing it since WAY back.

Hey all….can’t you just take the composite out of the deck straight into a DVD recorder? I do it all the time, with and without window time code. It doesn’t tie up my Kona card system either. Isn’t that easier?

Compressor will do it too. I saw a marginal increase in quality with the Nattress plug in but the render times were much longer. Compressor did a pretty good job.

One option is to get a processor upgrade so your software sees the higher speed…with the right drives, things should work pretty well.

Jumping in to add that I always believed that FCP could use a simple consolidate and decompose like in the old Avid. I know, it’s not an Avid. But those were two things that made consolidating media and creating a sequence with no associated clips so blasted easy….and it was ultra-reliable.

Apple seems to think we only want to work in full-rez all the time, but once in a while we just want to get rid of the extra media. Consolidate was perfect for that. And if we had all low rez media, decompose would create a sequence and bin full of offline clips that were only what was used in the sequence.

Again, Media Manager has a clunky workflow (make a new project, lots of buttons to click, not intuitive, sorry) and it hasn’t really ever been refined or reworked.
