Sorry for the dumb question – i’m not in front of a system right now so I can’t test for myself…

It’s been suggested to me that you can can capture HDV firewire in FCP into the DVCProHD codec. (i.e. on a system that doesn’t have an HD card)

I’m under the impression that this isn’t possible – can someone confirm this?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Correct, its not possible. It does in fact require a capture card.

You don’t need a “full blown” card to do it though. If the camera/deck you are using has HDMI out you can get a BlackMagic Intensity card for a couple of hundred bucks.

Or you can get a Convergent Designs M1 box that takes the HDMI and makes an HD SDI with embedded audio and takes the firewire and converts it to RS422 machine control. Works very well with our M25U deck.
