Any way to turn NTSC to PAL?
Posted by Steven Escobar on June 22, 2007 at 10:35 pmCan anyone tell me the best way to convert NTSC to PAL in FCP? Can I just drop my video into a PAL Sequence and render it? Will it be good quality?

June 23, 2007 at 2:41 amThe best way is not within a system like FCP but using external hardware. However, within FCP many recommend the Nattress Standards conversion filter.
The way you suggested is not a good path.

I highly recommend this filter, especially over Compressor. Render times are longer, but the resulting image is cleaner.

June 23, 2007 at 2:42 pmThere are 3 methods I know.
1) just let FCP or Quicktime do it. It just drops or adds frames, is quick, but looks BAD.
2) my filter – field based, slow, but “good” quality
3) compressor – can be set to look better than 1 or 2 above, but to get noticibly better than 2 and without artifacts I found the render time to be 40 times longer. So unbeleivebly slow.
Obviously, I write and use 2 above, but the free watermarked demo is for you to see if the quality / speed ratio of the plugin is right for you.

June 23, 2007 at 5:04 pmI can only confirm this. Believe me, you don’ really want to use Compressor at it’s best quality setting for anything longer than a few seconds.
Graeme’s filters offer a very good balance between quality, speed and cost.
I you want something better than that, go for a service company which is using an Alchemist from Snell & Willcox or serious hardware from Teranex. But you will probably spend more on one job than for a full license of Graeme’s.
No I’m not affiliated to his business

June 25, 2007 at 9:52 pmI have used Graeme’s Standards Conversion filter for several years now, and have had great results. We even did a comparison with D-Beta footage that we sent out to be converted on a high end hardware system and the Nattress footage had the better quality, hands down!
Again, no afiliation, just a satisfied user!
