The best way is not within a system like FCP but using external hardware. However, within FCP many recommend the Nattress Standards conversion filter.

The way you suggested is not a good path.

Compressor will do it too. I saw a marginal increase in quality with the Nattress plug in but the render times were much longer. Compressor did a pretty good job.

I highly recommend this filter, especially over Compressor. Render times are longer, but the resulting image is cleaner.

Agreed, it just won’t work. You’ll end up with a very bad image.

There are 3 methods I know.

    1) just let FCP or Quicktime do it. It just drops or adds frames, is quick, but looks BAD.

    2) my filter – field based, slow, but “good” quality

    3) compressor – can be set to look better than 1 or 2 above, but to get noticibly better than 2 and without artifacts I found the render time to be 40 times longer. So unbeleivebly slow.

Obviously, I write and use 2 above, but the free watermarked demo is for you to see if the quality / speed ratio of the plugin is right for you.

I can only confirm this. Believe me, you don’ really want to use Compressor at it’s best quality setting for anything longer than a few seconds.

Graeme’s filters offer a very good balance between quality, speed and cost.

I you want something better than that, go for a service company which is using an Alchemist from Snell & Willcox or serious hardware from Teranex. But you will probably spend more on one job than for a full license of Graeme’s.

I have used Graeme’s Standards Conversion filter for several years now, and have had great results. We even did a comparison with D-Beta footage that we sent out to be converted on a high end hardware system and the Nattress footage had the better quality, hands down!

Again, no afiliation, just a satisfied user!
