    Thanks for the link Richard. It is definately in the right catagory although it started out in plain english but digressed to some other langauge half way through. I think it’s some form of mathmatical lingo or something. I was thinking along the same lines though, use the AJA data rate calculator but I don’t understand how that relates to the block size. The rate calculator tells me the data rate of the format I’m using, (I’ve used 720X486 10-bit as that would be my highest resolution I would need). I get just under 28 MBYTES/Sec. but I don’t understand how this relates to the way the data is written to the disc. This is about 1 MByte per frame of video so you can’t even get a whole frame on a block on the hard disc. There must be some other form of logic involved with selecting the block size. It makes sense to me to let the heads write in long bursts once it has touched down on the platter as there is always a long stream of relative data to write with video. With smaller block sizes the head has to skip around more times. Perhaps with word proccessing apps. etc. the small blocks are better as data may not fill a 32K block, say for example a simple period . With video streams we are piling on the data thick and heavy pretty much non stop and can fill large block spaces to capacity very easily. By this logic we should be using 512K blocks but then What the Bleep Do I Know!!! The folks in the other thread are kinda stuck on 128K and I’m thinking I’m going to go halfway inbetween on this to 64K till I learn more about this.

    The 1st line says it all as far as I read it. One desktop and one laptop one FCP and one owner/user.

    I wish: I work alone in a one man office with 3 desktops. When one is tied up with a 3 hour encode I would like to hope over to another machine and continue working on motion or whatever. This is 1 customer, 3 towers, one FCP and one wage. I’d like to see it where the licensed owner can work it 24/7 if he wants as long as he is the only one. If that licensed user wants to layout the loot for more towers apple is doing good. Trouble is it is too hard to police. The problem is when a 2nd person sits down and starts working (making a wage). In a large facility there are too many potential users around and more than the licenced owner could be drawing a wage from the one license. I currently have 2 FCP licenses but I’m not a full time editor, I do everything around here and these upgrades are killing me. I guess it’s just too difficult for the software producers to cover every scenario in their license agreements. Rental suites are an example. Editors need only own hard drives and 5 different people use the same edit bay in one day. Maybe in the future all commercial video will need credits with the editors license number which will have to match a hidden watermark imbedded in each video frame. “2084”?

    The concept of one laptop and one tower is definately a step in the right direction, now I would like to see Apple adapt a “transfer of ownership” system like adobe has had for many years.

    The old amiga video toaster computers did this with 4 composite in and one out. In their time, 1″ broadcast video was composite at 500 lines. It was a great picture. I seem to remember an S-vhs card that came available too. These developers became the team that went on to create Play Trinity which is now owned and produced by Globecaster. You still see the Amiga Toasters on ebay and around for $50.00 and up and it would be great for your needs. You should run Toaser on a 2000 or faster Amiga computer. The Toaser Flyer was the non-linear version. Of coarse a bigger budget will allow use of a Videonics type mixer. While Apple’s Final Cut Pro can mix 4 streams of video in real time, you still need to capture each one on the hard drive first. I don’t know of any computer that allows several simultaneous inputs at once (other than the Amiga Video Toaster and it doesn’t write to the disc, it merely passes the mixed signal through to a deckwhile allowing you to add graphics, scrolling text and animated effects etc.). Until someone invents a multi-input card with the switching software you spoke of, this will always be the type of work for a switcher and a record deck.

    Thanks Steve! If a picture is worth a thousand words, that video spoke volumes! Great design! but I was looking at the wrong HDD. Doesn’t look like you can save by upgrading it yourself but I don’t know about the ram. It is $600.00 CND to go from 512 up to 2GB so a person needs to find the right ram for less than that. Too bad you couldn’t order the laptop with no ram. The only ram I’ve found so far with the right numbers (667 ddr2) is in long strips for the towers. It’s only $200.00 for 2 GB! By the look of it you’d have to cut the strip in half and glue the top edge to the bottom edge and it would kinda look like the laptop ram. There would have to be some soldering invoved too…. It’s just never easy to save a little money.
    I don’t like to sound like a cheapscape but these two option upgrades add over 50% price increase on the computer.

    I 3rd the motion. I have a firmtek card running 2 -2bay external drives for a total of 4 external drives and have had zero issues with the system. The card works in pci slots but if your pci-x is open you will gain performance benifits. I can’t speak to the performance of this set up when using the pci slot for the card. I have the dual 2gig g5 with the 3 pci-x slots and 2 internal drives.

    Thanks for the link! Way to go Panasonic! A La Mode! Nice to see the built in firewire and HDSDI! Now following the trend of technology, better – faster – cheaper, if it were to come in at 1/2 price of the 1200… (now I am dreaming…)

    What is your system? Some i/o’s only pull in channel 3+4 if there is audio on 1+2. You may have to switch your leads to your input device to input them on ch 1+2.

    Get the most lines and the biggest you can aford. I use a 20″ 1000 line monitor (of coarse my eyes aren’t that good). You can really see the mush around moving elements in your dvd encode. I’ve always preferred sony monitors but the jvc’s could be good, I’m not familiar with them but I’ve heard good comments about them here on the cow. Broadcast monitors have SMPTE phousphors which have a very long life and don’t shift their color like consumer monitors.
