  • Looking for a good NTSC monitor

I’m looking for a good monitor to hook up via S-video to a dvd recorder that”s hooked up via fire wire to my Mac.
One that’s caught my eye is a JVC TM H-1700GU that I saw advertised at Express video supply for $759.95 which is a 17″ and has 750 lines of resolution. Is any one familiar with this model or JVC in general? Can any one make some reccomendations about what to consider, such as ….what size to consider ? how many lines of resolution ? Fire wire hook up vs other way to hook up? Other models or brands to consider? And also, would a good quality consumer tv with S-video input work as well as a professional NTSC monitor?

A consumer TV isn’t ideal because there are often electronics built in to “enhance” the picture. This could potentially hide problems you need to see. It is better than using your canvas to monitor, however.

I own a Sony PVM 1354Q. In addition to an S-Video input, it has two composite ins, and a component in. Each of these inputs have an RCA input for audio so you can check your mix on a tiny speaker to make sure it sounds good in the worse case scenario. These extra inputs are a big help for the unexpected. You can find them used on eBay. Buyer beware.

Ikegami makes good quality professional monitors.

If you have the money and the need the Sony 14 and 20 inch multi-format L5 monitors are good investments. You can upgrade them with cards to add inputs. I’ve used these on freelance jobs and have been very happy.

I don’t have personal experience with JVC monitors.

    Thanks Tom for your feedback.
Any suggestions as far as size, lines of resolution, or ways of hooking it up ie, composite, S -video etc, and my plan for going via firewire from my Mac to a DVD recorder and then into the monitor?

Look at Sony sony PVM 14 L-1, 650 lines, sv, composite in/out about 500 bucks. All depends on what you want to spend

Get the most lines and the biggest you can aford. I use a 20″ 1000 line monitor (of coarse my eyes aren’t that good). You can really see the mush around moving elements in your dvd encode. I’ve always preferred sony monitors but the jvc’s could be good, I’m not familiar with them but I’ve heard good comments about them here on the cow. Broadcast monitors have SMPTE phousphors which have a very long life and don’t shift their color like consumer monitors.
