I disagree with the professor on this one.
If you used a Hot Hot Heat song on a wedding video where 1 copy went to the bride and groom and 1 copy to each set of parents I ask myself “who’s going to chase you down”? Use the same song for a corporate video or even your own demo reel where 1000 or 10,000 copies are distributed through a promotional mail out or it’s being played to a large audience and you’re asking for trouble.
Everything has it’s price. Can you or me negotiate with Celine Dion’s agent to use her song on our production? Probably not but James Camerons epic The Titanic was privilelged to have her work on the sound track and that exclucitivty is what sets things apart and gives value. When we access “free music” we probably don’t charge much for out project either. If we don’t pay for our music or software we can work cheap and under cut the competition and this is what happens in our industry. We cut our own throats. Buy your own software and royalty free music and charge a respectable fee. Clients respect that. Royalty free music has never been cheaper and there is some really decent tracks out there.
Regarding waivers, there is also a big issue of “NEWS” at play here. Firefighters etc etc could sue if they were used in a movie but if something happens in a public place and quallifies as “NEWS” it can be broadcast on the news or printed in the news paper as such without permission. Otherwise politicians, criminals and victims would block 90% of the news. (Oops, I guess my 1st. 2 examples really are the same thing) Any other use for such material requires releases.

Terry – Why not take a lesson from the big boys like B&H who have been taking orders for the camera for about a year now? On the other hand you’d have to deal with a lot of screaming prepaid customers who have to wait till April when others around them already have the camera in hand. Guess we Canadians can be thankful we’re not in PAL Land.

Canon has always offered several lenses for their interchangable lens cameras starting with the L1 Hi-8 camera. They typically offer a mild wide angle zoom (about 3x) and a radical long range zoom (around 20x like this one). These long focal length zooms are pretty difficult to use for interiors especially if you’re shooting events where pausing to change a lens is impossible. The wide angle zoom is a great peice of glass but it can be very restrictive too if you are shooting live action. The L1 had an 8mm – 120mm lens on it (1/2″ ccd) which pretty much meant you needed the wide angle lens a great deal of the time. One thing Canon can and does do well (after over 100 years) is make glass. I just wish they could keep the bayonette mounts consistent and make a mid-ranged zoom. The 20x is 38.9mm x778mm (in 35mm land), and the wide is around 24mm-72mm so how about a 28mm – 350mm or a 30mm – 375mm. Canon’s probably going to make a doubler anyway.

I have no experience with this burner but I agree with you on the menu they have. I had a philips 985 and it created a button menu and you could select any frame from your video to create the button. You could create as many as you needed too. It did have an artsy blue background with the philps name in it behind the buttons but it was far more cool looking than the lined text menus the panny’s have. It was a great machine when it was working (I got my money’s worth out of it). It might be an idea to look at other brands to see what they create for the opening menu. The more you spend the better they get but basically the price goes down and the quality goes up as progress moves along. The commercial unit Pioneer makes (LX1 or something) I think allows you to import menus etc. All in all these devices are worth their price which ever you buy, they do a great job in real time too.
Anyone else know of any that create a decent looking default menu or auto play?

Verbatim was very big into this when cd’s first came out. I think they have a line that was designed for longevity.

I’ve noticed this before on different occations. I just picked up “seamless” the movie and started watching it on my apple 23″ lcd and I was discusted at the poor quality of the picture. Finally I couldn’t bear to watch it. I put it in my dvd player and viewed it on a crt monitor and it was a whole lot better. I think the film was shot on a super 16 format but the dvd is 4:3? go figure.The picture quality was still not great but it was a huge difference from my 23″.
I’ve created dvd’s in compressor which look great on my crt but crappy on the 23″ also. I haven’t had time to experiment to see what is happening here but I’ll post again if I can solve this. I don’t get any lines like was mentioned above, just poor defintion. My crt is 1000 line BVM20E1U (with underscan).
I’ve also gotten discs from other people that looked astounding on the 23″ but wouldn’t play on my set top DVD player.

It seems like printing an 8×10 from a 35mm neg through an enlarger as oppossed to making an 8X10 contact print from an 8×10 neg with out any enlarger lens optics. The difference here is you get the depth of field of your selected apature but I can’t help thinking there must be some clarity lost from video tapeing a ground glass rather than 3d reality. (I should say video “recording” as video “tapeing” is becomming a thing of the past) If you could remove the video camera lens then you’re just using the 35mm lens which is the best set up. Perhaps it is good enough that the human eye can’t see the difference.
Another thing is the minimum close focus distance on the viceo camera is about where they must have to locate the ground glass. This would be in the wide end too. Most optics aren’t at their optimum clarity at the end of their zoom range as the curved outer edges of the lens elements are being used. Still I suppose the ccd’s could be the limiting factor over the optics. -
