  • What can we expect from NAB?

Posted by Sergio Perez on February 15, 2006 at 8:17 am

Hi everyone. I’ve been researching a lot lately concerning my upcoming HD camera purchase (and workflow change), and ended up with the decision on both a Mac with FCP5 ( which I ended up purchasing- a dual 2.7ghz PCI-x architecture- which got obsolete in mere months with the introduction of the quad 🙁 ), and of course the HVX (which I intend to get in Ntsc form next week (I’m in a Pal territory).

After reading a lot of your fine posts and comments (excelent moderation and professional input) I decided to make this small post or enquiry, to see if I can get some good, rational responses or guesses on what’s coming at NAB for both the HVX and FCP in therms of overall workflow integration.

A HVX question before the NAB ones 🙂

Is there any substantial change between the current batch of shipped HVX cameras and the original December 29 shipment? Noise issues where a concern, but these reports seem to be fading away with the new February US shipment…

    NAB Questions

1- Can we expect firmware updates at NAB for the HVX? Something like extra cinegamma settings, a foto mode, additional frame rates?

2- 16 gb P2 card announcement should be done at NAB. Any possibility of a further P2 Price drop. For either 4gb cards and 8gb cards?

3- The current P2 store is too small in size. Any possibility of larger versions of P2 stores to be announced at NAB? 160 to 200gb would be very nice indeed…

4- Should we expect full 1080i 24pa support on FCP6?

5- How about PAL 720p 50 support for the Pal HVX camera? This is VITAL for most Pal buyers.

6- Pal camera- is it mmyth or fiction? Its almost like the Loch Ness monster…

    Content is what matters.

I don’t think any of us know , that is why we go to NAB, to get answers and see the gear in action. I have questions for the folks at Adobe, Matrox and Panasonic. Best of all I get to see fellow shooters and get direct feedback from them on how new gear is working. I always find NAB worth the trip.

    Best wishes

[Noah Kadner] “I’m definitely expecting some free drinks, cocktails, brochures and t-shirts!”

I am expecting a lot of mediocre food, sore feet from being on concrete for days on end, as well as ears to ring from the sensory bombardment of having our booth near Apple and Avid, who — though they have been separated this year by an aisle — will in all likelihood still be performing their yearly rendition of the Hatfields vs the McCoys. ;o)

Oh, I almost forgot: I also expect to have a bunch of guys being paid minimum wage or less, try to hand me pornography everywhere I walk. Some, will even get nasty and insult me because I am not interested. Welcome to Las Vegas…

We’ll be giving away free subscriptions to the new Creative Cow Magazine while there and we will also bring along 500 Creative Cow mousepads and a few cases of Bovine Bessies Caribbean Style Chicken Sauce for some of those who swing by the booth and sign up for the magazine. But no t-shirts — not this year.

    Best,

    Ron,

Love the dancing cow icon in your post. And Las Vegas, well to each his/her own, but they can keep it as far as I’m concerned. I do like some of the desert around there though, including that big canyon thingie nearby.

    Aloha,

    Ken

Yes, I like that nearby canyon thingie, also. Amazing what a little water will do with a lot of dirt, eh?

Speaking of dirt: I hear that all the dirt that was removed out of that canyon is now on the walls and floors at the Circus Circus, the Imperial Palace and the Stratosphere. Having once been to vist friends in the Imperial Palace and the Stratosphere, I believe it. I’ve never been to see Circus Circus but I hear you can grow potatoes in the rooms there.

Not to start a flame war, but this started as a one sided fight. Two years ago Avid made it impossible to hear the Apple presentation when I was standing deep IN the Apple booth area. Desperation makes people do stupid things. The NAB organizers got a great many complaints… even from other booth owners near Avid.

Last year it wasn’t as much of a problem because the Avid booth was much less populated… people actually stood in the Avid booth and looked across the aisle to watch the Apple presentations.

Lets’ hope this year the aisle separation and the complaints from attendees and the NAB organization will have Avid a bit more calm…

Yes, I quite remember Avid’s decibel-rich pummeling of Apple that started this whole thing. Last year, as you say, it was quite different as even though Avid was still loud, the Apple booth was wall-to-wall people while the Avid booth often had just a smattering of people in the booth.

Hopefully, the people in the booths positioned between Avid and Apple are more than sacrificial lambs thrown into the chasm to appease the giants — who, if I remember my fairytales, “…grind your bones to make my bread.”

We’ll see (or hear) — whatever the case may be.

Very well said as usual Ron. If nothing else it made for interesting drama…
