G35 camera gizmo
Posted by Lars Wikstrom on February 19, 2006 at 6:25 pmI just saw some footage shot with this tool that looked amazing. But I’m a little lost as to what it is. I know it allows you to attach to DVX100 and soon the HVX200 and from there attach 35mm lensses to it. But there is something that they talk about that is Static vs. Vibrating.
Can some one enlighten me what that is?

February 19, 2006 at 9:41 pmThese “gizmos” (there are at least three I can think of) allow you to attach 35mm lenses to a video camera so you get the same depth of field as movie cameras. I have one and it is awesome.

February 21, 2006 at 12:12 amP+S technik and redrock micro are the two I know. P+S very expensive ( about $10K) and Redrockmicro M2 about $1K. I own the M2 and for the money is an incredible l product. A bit of a learning curve but woth the effort.

February 21, 2006 at 12:56 amActually, those gizmos look great in DV quality, and with the HVX(and those HDV cameras) it will look even better.
By “great,” I don’t mean to my eye, but I mean to 98% of viewers on 98% of TVs and ALL current delivery formats short of theatrical release(in which case, I’m guessing it looks “alright”).

February 21, 2006 at 6:35 amInteresting, now I know more about it. But, I still don;t know why it takes 2 AAA bateries? If it is just a lens attatchment that allows you to attach a lens, why the need for batteries?

“How does it work?
The G35 utilizes an INTERMEDIATE FOCUSING SCREEN, which is tuned specifically to minimize light loss. It works by passing you image through a 35mm lens and projecting it onto a VIBRATING screen.”The batteries vibrate the Intermediate Focusing Screen.
This gizmo attatches a 35mm lens to the front of a video lens. Inbetween the 35mm lens and video lens is the Intermediate Focusing Screen(IFS). The 35mm lens projects an image onto the IFS (which acts as a focal plane) and the video camera records the image from the other side of the IFS. The IFS is made of a grounded glass and has to vibrate and/or rotate so the ground glass texture blurs away.
Theres probably a better way of explaining this but I am partially iliterate. hope it helps!

It seems like printing an 8×10 from a 35mm neg through an enlarger as oppossed to making an 8X10 contact print from an 8×10 neg with out any enlarger lens optics. The difference here is you get the depth of field of your selected apature but I can’t help thinking there must be some clarity lost from video tapeing a ground glass rather than 3d reality. (I should say video “recording” as video “tapeing” is becomming a thing of the past) If you could remove the video camera lens then you’re just using the 35mm lens which is the best set up. Perhaps it is good enough that the human eye can’t see the difference.
Another thing is the minimum close focus distance on the viceo camera is about where they must have to locate the ground glass. This would be in the wide end too. Most optics aren’t at their optimum clarity at the end of their zoom range as the curved outer edges of the lens elements are being used. Still I suppose the ccd’s could be the limiting factor over the optics.
