  • sata expansion for G5?

Hi, I’m trying to figure out the best sata card option for my G5. It’s the older dual 2.5GHz so it’s PCI with I think one PCI-X slot. I’ve already got a FW PCI in slot 3 and I’ve installed a second HD inside the G5 also.

I’m looking to edit mostly DV but with the option of HDV/DVCProHD in the near future. I’ve read about G5Jam which sounds interesting (what about overheating?) and it’s pretty cheap. There are so many sata cards and they all sound fine but I’d love some feedback to help me decide. I’m thinking between the likes of Sonnet, Firmtek but open to anything. Thanks for any help.

Sonnet and Firmtek are both great. I own two Firmtek cards and I like them a lot. Also own two bay and four bay enclosures from Firmtek, which are equally nice.

Gary- I second David on the external SATAs. We have one Firmtek two bay and two four bay enclosures on our G-5 PCI-X systems and couldn’t be happier. You plug them in and they work. Great for expansion also…. buy extra trays and drives in pairs for less than 50 cents a gig. Hot swappable and they’re quiet and don’t heat up the interior of the G-5.

I 3rd the motion. I have a firmtek card running 2 -2bay external drives for a total of 4 external drives and have had zero issues with the system. The card works in pci slots but if your pci-x is open you will gain performance benifits. I can’t speak to the performance of this set up when using the pci slot for the card. I have the dual 2gig g5 with the 3 pci-x slots and 2 internal drives.

many thanks for that. Firmtek’s definitely well represented here then!
