Do you have the externall HDs for capturing “Journaled”? If so disable the journaling and set them to “Ignore ownershup in this volumen’.
Defragmenting the HDs is not an issue as long as you got free memory enough. If when capturing the systhem drop frames is because is not fast enough to reccord all of them. Uncheck the option “Abort capture on dropped frames” and “Warn when importing non-optimized media” (this in FC 5.0.4 . In FC 4.5 “warn when dropped frames” or any other), and try to capture like that. Normally you wont see any problem in the captured clips.
just to add that I use few small LaCie FireWire 400 (200Gbs) and a laCie FW 800 with 350Gbs. I don’t know why but the FW 400s work better than the FW 800. For exampl whenever I make a “Capture Now” the FW400s start to reccord immediatly, when the FW 800 its takes few seconds to start reccording. I don’t know if is because the FW interface or because being a bigger disk the system need more time to allocate the memory or so.

Hi kutmasta,
The theory of Colorimetry is one of the hardest to understand technicall matters I’ve ever tried to go through. I would recommend you to start with some “applied” knowledge for instances CC in FC. If you learnt how to use the video-scope in FC you will know how to use a externall Tektronik. If you understand how the 3-Ways CC works in FC will help you to understand how the most sophisticated CC software works.
So my advice is to start to build your knowledge fwith a more practicall than theoreticall scope. After you can start to dig deeper in the theory of color and light.
to start I recommend the book ADVANCED CC AND EFFECTS IN FC, from the Apple Pro trining Series.

Hi Carlos,
Compressor is a very good because you got full control of the process, but can be very, very slow. Try the Nattress Format Conver plugin. You can apply it directly in FC. I’ve never used it but I read many people in this forum talking very well about it.

Hi Kevin,
I’ve got a BM SD (not HD) and only the SDI conexion carry audio. If I switch the monitor in Components or RGB there is not audio imput.
I guess the HDI conexion works the same way.

Hi splogcooper,
Most of the video camcorders and desks got a set-up that prevents to print to video. You must set DV EE OUT to OFF. I don’t know if this is your case, but this set-up drive mad many people.

I’m not an infomatic, but the idea I’ve got is more or less like that:
1Byte is the same that 8 Bits, because in the beguining of the digital world were used 8 bits “words”.So when we talk about MEGAS (i.e. : This is a 20M file) that means that the file is composed of 20.000.000 words with 8 bits ( “0” or “1”) each. So that means that 1M is the same that 8.000.000 bits= 8Mbs.
For example when we record DV we get files of 3.5M each second (aprox). If you multiply 3.5 x 8 you get around 25Mbs, That match the data-rate of the DV format.
So more or less if you want translate “Kilobytes” or “Megabytes” in to “Kbs” or “Mbs” just multiplie it by 8. This also match the data shows in FC when you import yours MP3. If you multiplie the 11.7K/se x 8, you get the 96 Kbs.

Hi Adam,
there is also a good book from the “Apple Pro Training Series”: Advnced CC and Effects in FCP5. As the title sais is based in FC, but the science of the CC its works basically the same in every application.

I dont know if the limit in resolution is a matter of QT or FC. But If you want to work with those sizes iI think you need a program that support un-limited resolution for example Shake. I guess AE7 can manage such a files too.

As long as I know MPG2 do not support LTC neather VITC. LTC is a digital signal that get recorded in a longitudinal track (an audio track) and VITC is embed in the image. Each frame it got its own clock-time. This is uncompatible with a format that, as the MPG2, use GOPs instead of independient frames. If your client is happy with the MPG2 but he needs TC to sync the audios, I would sugest you to send the MPG2 as you do, and appart send the .aiff with a embed TC.
