Just in case anyone else is having this problem and stumbles across this post – I cured the problem by uninstalling the most recent drivers (can’t recall the version number) and installed v6.4 as per all the advice here:

(not at the wrong link I put up before!) My machine is happily batch capturing at this very minute. It remains to be seen if any of it is frame accurate…

Just caught sight of this thread which deals with this very issue. Sorry to have ‘double parked’ my own experience!

Hope the tech guys get a fix on this quickly. Nowhere does it clearly flag up the problem on the Blackmagic site or I might have made a different decision on the card type. as it is I will try the earlier driver as suggested.

Very red face.
Thanks for your restrained replies – pretty fortunate not to be too flamed. Actually I did a search first but obviously didn’t hit the right keywords.
Of course Color opened first time after folowing the advice in the other thread (thanks Walter). All that reamins is to learn how to use it.
Thanks all, Pete -
Splendid – much heartened by all this. We currently edit Digibeta SD /SDI and will continue to for the next 12 months thence onward to HD of some flavour or other.
Our existing suite has the capacity to upgrade to HD and the next suite will also – so I know what we are looking at in terms of future capacity. It’s also comforting having developed an understanding of our current machine too.
My real concern was if there was a lot of ‘Black Art’ stuff relating to the mystical communication between the hardware and software – but it looks as though this is reasonably straightforward with the G5, Blackmagic Decklink, etc.
It also doesn’t hurt to have a relative who is ex HO Engineering at a large TV station! So on the whole I think we’ll take a crack at it ourselves.
Thanks to all for your comments, as ever. Great food for thought. Pete

It’s a common problem here too, with the sources tapes have the audio recorded at too low a level. Try using the excellent Compressor/Limiter provided in FCP in your Audio Filters. It gets us out of trouble many a time. Make sure you tick the ‘Preserve Volume’ box and set the compression to around 1.5 which will squash the audio dynamics a bit but at the prize of giving you much more volume to play with. You need to experiment with the ‘Threshold’ value to make it operate successfully.
I often find this better and quicker than firing up Soundtrack Pro (which is nonetheless a very good tool).
Good luck, Pete -
We’re using a sound recordist who will provide a feed to the camera. We’ve already created a pilot and despite the AGC on these kind of cameras the sound was usable. There will be a fast turnround on these programmes and we can’t afford the time to go double system unfortunately. The tests showed some audio pumping but it was tolerable.
I simply wondered if there was a very small widescreen camera that professionals tended to use for these shoots. My experience is pretty limited in this field. -
As ever, this forum comes up with the answers! thanks Matt and Tom

Good old G-RAID. They work flawlessly with 8 bit uncompressed SD from my Digi deck, so I would have thought they could handle 3mb/s. As I say, the video plays without a problem from the browser, so I don’t reckon it’s a question of slow drives. I suspect it’s a Sequence Preset issue…
