I need to darken the sky on a clip. Is there a simple way of adding a Grad Filter effect to a clip without exporting to Motion? I’ve searched the archives but no luck. Maybe there’s a plug in someone knows about?

One quick way is to create a “Gradient” in the Render generator, add it to the video track above your clip, and “mix” over your clip by a small amount.

Or use Joe’s Filters. The set has a nice Graduated filter that will do just what you want. Lots of other useful stuff as well.

You could also use the 4 or 8 point garbage matte that comes with FCP.

Put a copy of the shot on the top layer, lower the opacity to the lower layer copy and put the filter on the top clip and adjust as needed. You can even key frame the thing for effects over time etc.
