We are porting Graffiti and FX over to 64 bit so that they will operate within the CS5 host environment but that release will not happen until later this year. The same holds true for RED.

Hi Peter,

I received the RED settings file from you – thanks for that. Earlier this morning I sent a modified file back to you in an email that explains the source of the problem. Here’s the text from my message:

If you select the text track and then go to the lights tab in the control panel window, you can see that there are 3 lights, switchable via the tabs to the left of the control panel. Only light 1 is enabled, but the control panel is showing light 2 so any changes will have no effect on the result. I switched the control panel to the Light 1 tab by clicking on the light 1 tab to the left of the control panel, and observed that the light which was being used on the text was set to a shade of blue, which accounted for the color shift in the logo. I changed the color from blue to white and the color of the text became the expected red that you were trying to achieve. I also set the intensity of the light to 100, which I thought looked a little better.

Hi Peter,

In the Materials tab, you will find that making adjustments to most of the parameters will have an effect on the color of the extruded text block. The parameter that has the most effect would be the Diffuse parameter – you should start by setting that to a value of 100 and then back it off as needed. Keep in mind that any lighting that you have in the scene will also have an effect on the color of the text, as will any reflection maps, should you be using any of them.

If you open the style palette, and go to the brush tab, then click on the pop-up above the brush profile icon and you should see a variety of different brush sets that can effectively emulate many different looks, including a bristle brush. For the bristle brush, select “spray brushes” and then scroll the panel on the right to the bottom and you should find a few to your liking.

You can add to the built-in brushes using image files to generate your own customized looks.

Hi Kay,

Sounds like the result of a preference file that needs to be deleted. If you are on a Mac, remove this file:

MacintoshHD/Users/(LoginName)/Library/System Support/Boris RED 4.3™Preferences

If you are on Windows, remove this file:

c:\Windows\BorisRED4.3.ini

Then just relaunch the RED Engine or the plug-in and a new default preference file will be generated by the application.

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear of the troubles that you’ve been experiencing with RED lately. I hope to offer an explanation for some of the woes that have cost you time on the project.

You mention that using RED 4.3, you opened a RED 3.0.2 project file and then closed it without saving without saving, yet is became stamped or identified by RED as belong to RED 4.3. My guess is that you have the Auto-Save function enabled in RED 4.3. Can you check that? If this is the case you might want to disable that feature in the RED 4.3 preferences. Also, if you are worried about something like this happening again, you might want to consider duplicating the project file before opening it in another version of the software. I know this advice is a little too late but something to consider moving forward.

Regarding the other issue, RED is resolution independent and you should expect to be able to change a project size at any time. If you would like to send me a project file along with an example of the EPS that you are using, I’ll take a look to see if I can understand what the problem is. Feel free to send me the project and EPS via email (peterm@borisfx.com) as they should be small files.

I think I understand the problem that you are facing however it would be much easier for us to accurately diagnose the issue if we had a project to view. Is there any chance that you could send us a sample project with notes detailing the problem? You can send that to us via yousendit ftp service, which is free for transfers that are under 100 Mb. The recipient address should be support@borisfx.com. Please make sure to zip all of the files into one archive before sending them to us.
