    Hi
On a J-30 SDI Menu option 005 enables/disables timecode super on the composite outpt, and option 027 does the same for the SDI.
I think the same printed manual does both models, so it may be the same for both (maybe ‘extended’ menu needs enabling).

    Hi
No difference whatsoever IME – a hard drive at its fastest will only be half as fast as either spec bus.

    Hi
I’ve got a Sony J-30 Digibeta player permanently wired to one FW port on the rear of one of my pair of Apple 23″ displays, and a DSR-25 DVCAM deck connected to the other FW port.
Only one or the other is powered up when working with FCP, and this has been working day-in-day-out for the past year without glitch. They can be both powered for Digi>DV dubbing as long as FCP isn’t open.
On the 2.5GHz dual G5’s FW800 port there are usually 3xFW800 drives for DV media being edited, and 1 or 2 FW400 drives connected for file backup. Again more-or-less glitch-free (I usually take the FW400s offline for critical moments like tape playout.

    Hi
From the UK here’s a link to a report of a BBC initiative to sell an integrated shared-media FCP workflow to broadcasters worldwide:

[karatevideoguy] “Did I really mess up my DSR-11”
    Hi
I know someone else who did this (with a hard drive not a DSR-11). He killed everything in the chain, but not the Mac I think.

February 22, 2006 at 10:31 am in reply to: Edit to Tape Insert

    Hi
I normally only work with DV, but recently we had a DV master transferred to DigiBeta for a client, and then heard there was an issue about music clearance of a song on the track.

So I borrowed an AJA Io and an A500P DigiBeta recorder, and set up my system (FCP 5.0.2/QT 7.0.2/Dual 2.7 G5) to work through the AJA.
First I did an audio insert on the end of the tape with two 1 frame 2-pops 10sec apart (first/last frame) as a test. That was fine.

Then I did the same insert again over the top, but offset i frame, to check that the in/out points were frame accurate, which they were – resulting in a 2 frame 2-pop at the start.

So I insert-edited a mix of the music track with new music over the section – which worked fine, and replaced (insert-edit) the end roller video with the song credit changed – again fine.

I came away thinking what an amazine piece of kit the Io is, and how much of a joy it is to work with the A500 (all front panel switches) compared to the M2000P’s proliferation of menus….
Thankfully I knew nothing of this ‘bug’ being reported here 😉

    Hi
Its best to have the audio monitoring set to the same output as the video, as there can be slight latency in passing the video to the FW port, which can give out of sync playback monitoring.

Go to the FCPHD Menu and check Audio/Video Settings. Is Video Playback set to FW?
If that’s OK then make sure the External Video setting at the bottom of the View Menu is set to All Frames. There’s a Refresh A/V Devices option there that may help once the settings are correct.

    Hi
Not just the DSR-11, the DSR-20(P) and DSR-25 can also read timecode from SimpleVideoOut/FCP3.

February 17, 2006 at 11:02 am in reply to: J30 digibeta deck not seen by FCP

    Hi
I’ve had this when I’ve tried to use the J-30 FW at the same time as having three FW400 drives daisy-chained to the other FW port on a G4MDD.
As soon as I disconnected the third FW drive everything worked again…
It was a generic FW drive-case with a Prolific bridge board, which must have caused an identity clash on the FW bus with the J-30.

    Hi
I use a J-30 SDI extensively, and its excellent. I am making a series of DVDs from archived newsreels which are on Beta SP or DigiBeta, editing in DV timelines, capturing via FireWire.
I ran a comparative check on the FW conversion that the deck does and it seems the best I’ve seen – better than the DSR-20/25 decks (S-Video in) that I also use.

Its a huge advantage having identical timecode on the captures from analogue tapes. Also the PAL/NTSC switchability is constantly getting used for USA/European footage.
One big disadvantage though with Beta SP is you can’t get audio off Tracks 3 & 4 with a J-30 🙁 (I keep another old BVW Beta player just for that.)
