Sending timecode out from the timeline
Posted by Andrew King on February 16, 2006 at 3:21 pmIs it possible to output the timecode from the timeline to an external timecode reader, or out to the deck?
Producers are always asking what timecode we are at in the timeline, and it would be helpful if they could see it on the monitor.
Thanks,

February 16, 2006 at 3:58 pmYou can add a “timecode reader” window onto your cut, but that’s usually done as a final step, not for work in progress. Open up “help” and do a search for “timecode reader” for more info.

February 16, 2006 at 4:35 pmI agree, filters are useful for making window burns etc. But can FCP simply output the sequence timecode to the deck? I have no need for a permanent burn-in.

February 16, 2006 at 7:46 pmThe only FIREWIRE deck taht FCP can send timeline timecode to is the DSR-11, and with that you need to go thru a few steps.

If you have a capture card and a deck connected to it via Component or SDI and RS-422 control, getting timeline timecode is simple. Prestripe a tape with BLACK, then INSERT EDIT.

February 16, 2006 at 8:42 pmWhile that hack does work for only one deck and with a Dev Tool you have to dig for, in general NLEs will not output TC – even Avid.
The way to do that going back to the old days is to black and code your tape beginning at 58:00:00. Then backtime your pre-show elements for your show to begin at 1:00:00:00. In Edit to Tape enter the backtimed TC into the In Point – then Assemble Edit.
That way, your sequence Time Code will match your sequence Time Code.

After reading everyone’s response, it seems like what you’re looking for is simply a “large timecode window” that’s visible on your NTSC monitor as you edit for your producer to see. Am I correct? If so, you’re out of luck. You’re probably thinking of the green timecode window from an AVID, right? Sorry. Not at this time.

Not just the DSR-11, the DSR-20(P) and DSR-25 can also read timecode from SimpleVideoOut/FCP3. -

February 18, 2006 at 3:18 amHow is it that certain audio control surfaces can display the timeline’s timecode, but there isn’t a way to gain access to it. That timecode is probably being sent via midi. Someone should develop a means to get to that MTC. Then it can easily be converted to SMPTE timecode with any number of existing boxes.
