I’ve never had much luck with trying to insert audio and/or video with short durations with any version of FCP.

For example, today I was outputting to DigiBeta via KONA2 and discovered while laying to tape an audio mistake we made. We let the show finish and tried to go back and insert the audio to fix the mistake. I set my in and out points (duration about 15 seconds) and wanted to preview it to make sure it was a clean edit.

I turn the video off, hit the preview button… the tape machine cues up (3 second pre-roll) and when the deck gets to the input point the FCP preview window goes away (as if it was finished with the edit) and the deck stops.

After several attempts to try and make this work, I decided to insert the whole segment (duration 3:49) and it works fine. What is the deal?

    Setup:

    FCP 5.04
    G5 2.7 Dual
    2 GB RAM
    KONA2 Card
    1.6 TB Xserve RAID

Both myself an several other people have posted about this bug on this forum. I posed about it several months ago, another person posted about three or four months ago. The problem still exists. This is not a “feature”. This is a BUG.
You are correct, FCP can no longer do an audio insert. Whether or not you select audio only or audio and video it won’t work. It used to work with FCP 4.5. Ever since FCP 5 came out this has been an issue. The only solution is to Assemble form the insert point to the end of the program. This really sucks if you have a clip at say 1 minute into a 90 minute program with bad audio. That requires relaying the entire 90 minute program due to a two second audio glitch.
All I can suggest is that you send Apple feedback using the Feedback menu option. This is just one of many audio related bugs in FCP right now.

This is news to me. I once had a problem with doing the same thing but after coming in the next day to do it again it worked fine. I have been insert editing both video and sound since V1.25, although Apple at the time highly recommended that you not do it for frame accurate edits, it worked every time with the A500 Digibeta. With V5 I have only had one problem. I worked that problem from every possible angle I could imagine at least two hours of messing around. When I came in the next day and tried again, it worked fine. Hi
I normally only work with DV, but recently we had a DV master transferred to DigiBeta for a client, and then heard there was an issue about music clearance of a song on the track.

So I borrowed an AJA Io and an A500P DigiBeta recorder, and set up my system (FCP 5.0.2/QT 7.0.2/Dual 2.7 G5) to work through the AJA.
First I did an audio insert on the end of the tape with two 1 frame 2-pops 10sec apart (first/last frame) as a test. That was fine.

Then I did the same insert again over the top, but offset i frame, to check that the in/out points were frame accurate, which they were – resulting in a 2 frame 2-pop at the start.

So I insert-edited a mix of the music track with new music over the section – which worked fine, and replaced (insert-edit) the end roller video with the song credit changed – again fine.

I came away thinking what an amazine piece of kit the Io is, and how much of a joy it is to work with the A500 (all front panel switches) compared to the M2000P’s proliferation of menus….
Thankfully I knew nothing of this ‘bug’ being reported here 😉

Other than running into the machine room and manually punching the audio insert buttons on the A500 we haven’t found a way to make this work. If anyone has any advice as to a fix for this proplem I’d love to hear it. We’re using both Aurora Pipe Studio cards and AJA Kona 2’s at our facility. AJA tech support thought it might have been that the device control was set to 4 channel, but it was set to the proper 2 channel. So that wasn’t the problem. Stumped. Glad to hear others are able to get an audio insert to work. Again, we have no problem with video insterts, it’s just the audio doesn’t lay down. Assemble edits are no problem either; both audio and pic.
