instead of a copy/paste load the source sequnce into the viewer,
and do a “Sequence Content” edit (Apple F10 to overwrite, Apple F9 to insert)

actually, while this scenario has the POTENTIAL for disaster,
there might be an easy fix.

if your friend only re-named the CLIPS, not the MEDIA, then his project would still be linked to files that have the same names as yours.

the project file should remember this,
and if the file path is identical on both systems,
then it should conect without any prompting.

for the file path to be identical, the drives have to have the same name.

maybe your frind used Media Maanger to create an offline version of the project.
this would be one rason your version has lost it’s links.

all he needs to do is to copy the relavent sequnce/s into a project and save it.
then zip of that project file (right click on the file, chose “make archive” or “compress”)
and email it to you.

now IF this opens, you can sort out the re-naming mess, using the Modify > Name functions
you can chose to modify the clip names back to the original file names,
or
change the file names to match the clip names.
this could be tricky given your RED workflow

you would do this at the same time, maybe on the phone.

there is a new app that might help you.
it can take an XML batch list, and import that into FCP and connect to existing media as subclips.

then run them through this.

i think XML is somehow the answer.

FCP doesn’t have a “Date Created” column 🙁
maybe there’s been one added in FCP7, but i kind of doubt it.

can you sort by Timecode? (Media Start column)

maybe, but from memory FCP’s RT was optimised for the 3way CC as it is a real work-horse.
i seem to recall it being one of the first filters with RT.

i doubt very much anything will fix those problems.
sounds like there’s too much info missing from your captures.

some screen shots would help a lot.

hopefully you will find a solution,
but i’d say look elsewhere… maybe After Effects for the Image and ProTools for the sound??
FCP doesn’t have the tools to do it.

sounds a bit like you are “presenting” your video to the desktop.

Apple F12 will toggle that on AND off.
(and look under your View Menu for that, too…. not to mention the manual)
