I have been using FCP 7 for about a week now and have had some intriguing mysteries.
First of all a credit roll I have been using in a current TV series use to render fine in FCP 6 but in FCP 7 it renders all jagged. This was made up using the ‘scrolling text’ generator. Seems it is now broken in FCP 7 so I have recreated it in Motion so I worked around that one…
The biggest problem I am now having is the way FCP 7 is determining what needs rendering and what doesn’t.
I am using a Mac Pro 8 core with 8 gig ram attached to a Black Magic Multibridge Extreme. In FCP 6 I could add many filters and it would not show any rendering required in the render bar. But in FCP 7 if I add a color corrector filter and a broadcast filter it shows orange in the render bar but plays through without any quality loss or frame dropping. But it has to render it to perform an ‘edit to tape’. What interests me the most is if I replace the ‘color corrector filter’ with the ‘3 way color corrector filter’ it would NOT show the orange in the render bar and NOT have to render it to ‘edit to tape’.
Isn’t there more processing required with the ‘3 way color corrector filter’ than just the ‘color corrector filter’?
At the moment I am putting it down to the fact that maybe the Multibridge drivers will need an update for FCP 7 but I am not so convinced. Seems to me this new ‘intelligent render management’ new to FCP 7 is a little retarded?
I put the cloned drive back into the Mac (made prior to the FCP 7 upgrade) and ran FCP 6 again and sure enough, nothing required rendering as FCP 7 requires. Is it that FCP 7 can’t determine the ‘realtime capabilities’ of my Mac anymore?!? Why do aliens visit Earth but never say “hello”? More mysteries of the universe…

Anyone else experiencing these FCP 7 nigglies?

When you upgrade or install a new version of FCP, all its settings are reset. So, a lot of your sequence settings, playback settings, RT settings are reset. You may have set them in FCP 6 in such a way that renders and playback of effects laden shots were affected in a certain way.

Which is why, when you went back to FCP 6 everything went back to normal. Also, you opened a project created in a previous version, in FCP 7. That too affects things.

And, for a while capture card makers will have drivers that aren’t up to speed in the effects playback department. So bear with that. It might help to inform the card manufacturer with a specific issue. They often may not reply you but they will certainly try it out and even quietly correct it in the next release. Has happened to me.

maybe, but from memory FCP’s RT was optimised for the 3way CC as it is a real work-horse.
i seem to recall it being one of the first filters with RT.

    Baz,
i’m in Sydney too, and still waiting for my FCP7 upgrade.
can i ask who you got yours though?

    thanks,

I don’t know about 7 but there’s an issue in 6 I run into whenever I have to re-build the preferences (new installs, re-installs, etc)

The setting for what gets rendered when you tell the timeline to render are not in the user preference pain. They are in the Sequence drop-down menue. If you look at the render settings in the Sequence drop down menue most of the items (needs render, proxy, preview, etc) will be unchecked, but for better rendering results I find its better to have them all checked.
    Have fun!
