  • Question – Problem with Sequence Getting Renamed

Posted by Lauren Timmons on August 5, 2009 at 2:07 am

I just upgraded to FCP 7 (from 5) and now when I create new projects and save a sequence with the correct name (ie: “Ep1v01”), and then drop a clip into the timeline that corresponds to that sequence, it automatically re-names the sequence as whatever that clip is labeled (so instead of “Ep1v01”, the sequence title turns into “scene1take1”). And when I put a new clip into the timeline, it re-names the sequence as the new clip (as in “scene2take2”).

Any idea why it would be doing this? And, how do I get it to stop?

    Thanks!

    i haven’t got FCP7,
but have a look in your user preferences.

I looked in user settings, but not sure what I should look for?

It’s currently set (in “EDITING”) as:
Auto conform sequence “Ask” (vs Never or Always) &
“Always scale clips to sequence size” is checked (selected)

Someone PLEASE solve this problem. The exact same thing started happening to me after upgrading and it’s driving me nuts (plus wreaking havoc on my projects).

    yes, please!
now it’s happening to me, too…
    BUT WORSE!

    this started happening last night:

any time i moved or nudged a clip,
the sequence was re-named after that clip!

    then today (same project):

i copied a still image in the browser,
pasted contents to a still image in a timeline,
and ALL THE CLIPS in the Timeline adopted the name of the browser still!

now that i look back in that project,
for some reason the copied still now has the name of another sequence altogether,
all other clips have the name of the still!

good thing this is a very minor project,
    otherwise i’d be pretty annoyed!

    Are you all in PAL?

    All the best,

sort of, but not exactly, to be a bit pedantic

that project was ProRes 1920×1080 50i,
    so a “PAL” frame rate

trashed prefs, and am now working in a more complex, more PAL project. (ProRes PAL 720×576 50i)

    going OK, touch wood.

this project was started in FCP6.
all editing at this stage is via copy paste, timeline to timeline,
    and moving clips around,
    not cutting into timeline.

Hi. I’m the original poster. I wasn’t working in PAL, and while I couldn’t figure out any way to fix my exisiting projects (where every clip in the timeline got renamed), I have figured out how to keep it from happening again.

In my case, there could have been 2 causes.

One, when I create new sequences, I now right click on the sequence and select “make sequence clips independent”.

Secondly, I had been working with footage I logged using markers, and I’d been putting the clips I made with markers into my timeline (which apparently is a no-no). Now, after I log my footage with markers, I create sub-clips (go to “Modify” and select “Create SubClip”) and I use the sub-clips instead.

Haven’t had any re-naming issues since. Hope this helps!

I’m cutting in DVC PRO HD 24p and it’s doing the same thing and driving me nuts. I’ve trashed prefs and tried the stuff in the post two ahead, and nothing’s working. I’ll try and reinstall tomorrow…

A lot of my Apple devices are a bit kludgey lately. Is Mercury in retrograde?

    Best,

I am having a similar issue. I have a project that is a new FCP7 project. When I insert or overwrite a clip into the timeline the sequence gets renamed to the name of that clip. Sequence was duplicated from another sequence, but I tried creating a new sequence then copying and pasting the contents of the other sequence to the new sequence but get the same results. It is very annoying.

Running FCP7 on 10.5.8. I used to have FCP6 on this computer. I manually removed 6 and did a fresh install of 7.

I believe this problem has been resolved for me. I had a freeze frame in the sequence and when I removed the freeze frame the problem went away. This tip was given to me by someone on the Apple forum here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2128358&start=15&tstart=0. Hopefully this will help some of you.
