I don’t know how to go to 3ds, but my advice would be to just output some (high res) clean plates out of 3ds, and use some clever compositing and layering to blend the talent with the plate. Or buy a camera tracker, then you’ll have a slew of choices to output into. Syntheyes is VERY worth it for the money and ease of use. I think Mocha is on sale today at toolfarm.com too. 50% off is a sweet deal for software now-a-days.

Word on the streets is that faster drives help with the bottleneck — think about it — if you’re increasing your processor speed 8 fold you’ll have to increase your read/write speed pretty substantially —

or do it on the miniature level with firecrackers, zippo fluid, and a dv cam. Be careful though!

September 12, 2007 at 4:09 pm in reply to: Cine 4d, Maya, or 3D Max? Need help deciding

I chose cinema 7 years back, and I don’t regret it. It has tight integration. You can actually output an AE file out of C4D to make your life easier. It isn’t nearly as robust as max or maya, but I figured I didn’t need the confusion 🙂

Cinema is great with motiongraphics stuff. Not saying that max or maya isn’t, but they don’t have a specific module for it. For the price point of a standard license, advanced render, tgp, and mograph, you can really get a lot of BANG for your buck. Some people don’t consider it professional, but when you make your choice you’ll realize that it isn’t about the software, its entirely about the artist.

How many times has this come up? Who knows anymore. Every piece of software has its ups and downs. Its about you making a decision and sticking to it, and not regretting it. I could have chosen Combustion a few years back, but I didn’t, and I don’t regret being an AE user.

    Invest in 3dfluff.com and lynda.com.

Yup. I’d try animating some masks with some fractal noise, and add some distortion. Don’t forget about a heat warp!

Try stock footage too. DETONATIONFILMS.com is GREAT for that sort of thing.

    Sly

Be more specific. What kind of explosion? Fire is generally fractally in AE.

Used to have some really sweet fire tutorials for AE. Now they’re retired!

September 5, 2007 at 4:27 pm in reply to: cinema 4D camera transfer…which 3D tracker?

Its easy stuff. You don’t even have to render the c4d file if you won’t want, just click the SAVE AFTER EFFECTS PROJECT, and it’ll output a camera with missing footage.

Maybe scale it up in c4d, for some reason teh cameras are small in afx. Also, you can export a maya camera out of a lot of pieces of software (i own syntheyes…and it all really depends on what you need to do…) and import the maya camera into AE. Pretty sweet deal.

FYI, I’m tryin a length(a,b) expression and a linear expression attached to a fast blur effect. It seems to be working ok, but if anyone knows how to pull a blur amount…
