    you can shoot with a digital stills camera (potentially better reoslution than a DV camera)
    Digital stills are named and numbered as sequentially, such as DSC_0001, DSC_0002 etc.

    You can then open this sequence of stills in QuickTime (one step using Open Image Sequence)and export then as a movie at the frame rate, size and codec you so desire.

    You can even open the stills in PhotoShop or similar and grade/manipulate the images individually (to fix one dud frame, like paint out a fly) or as a batch (to increase their sharpness with Unsharpen filter)

    Ideal if you can record the stills direct to your computer. This allows you to view the sequence at any given time.

    (I mean, at what point in the programming stage, did a rocket scientist say: “No, we don’t need to alert the user to the fact that their render is ready”???)

    Maybe …
    Try opening the audio file in QuickTime and exporting it as an Aiff at 48k 16bit (the same as you say it is, now)
    Import that into the PAL project and see how it goes …

    Not really ‘everyone’

    We’ve been caught out sending QT files to clients in large organisations, who can’t read QTs because its not installed on their computer, and they need their internal IT department to approve and conduct the installation, which, in some organisations, can be such a difficult process, it becomes unworkable.
    Hence, we’ve been using Windows Media files a lot; suits all PC users, and is a lot easier for Mac users to download & install Windows Media Player for Mac.

    We use (I know, not everyone has this) Canopus ProCoder, which does a nice job of turning my final QTs from FCP into a variety of WMV files, either for preview (small) or full video size (for use in PowerPoint, etc.)

    That’s our experience.

    FCP doesn’t show the data rate for a seq – only sources. However, I opened the Animation render file in QuickTime and it says the datarate is 215.23 mbits/sec.
    My render file that worked, with ‘None’ as the codec in FCP Sequence settings, showed in QuickTime as a BlackMagic RGB codec and a datarate of 659 mbits/sec.
    Much larger datarate than the Animation codec, yet it plays in realtime, whereas the slower rate Animation file struggles …
    The drives are a SANman disk array. BlackMagic’s Disk Speed Test rates them as 182MB/sec. Allowing for the bits/bytes conversion, the drives should handle the datarate of both the above files …
    So maybe its not a data rate issue:

    This sounds like the issue. Strange though, that it has trouble even updating by clicking down the timeline and not trying play realtime…

    I’ll assume its an issue with codec, but I’d still love a definitive answer.

    Stills for video should always be 72 dpi, shouldn’t they?
    Frame size can vary, though.

    Yes, you’ll need to setup your FCP system for PAL and use a PAL deck and a PAL-based capture setting.
    Then use Compressor to do the conversion.
    To get a really good standards-conversion using Compressor will take considerable time.
    Women can conceive, carry and deliver a baby in less time!

    Well … almost …
    And having waited an eternity for the conversion, you may find you don’t like the results and so, have to repeat the process.

    Technically, Compressor will do it.
    Practically, it may drive you nuts.
