  • How to convert PAL to NTSC for a via FCPHD

Posted by Harlan Richter on August 4, 2005 at 3:17 pm

I have a customer that has a pal video tape and wants it converted to NTSC. The new FCP 5.0 has a converter via Compressor. How do I get the Pal footage into FCPHD 5.0 to convert it?
    1. Do I need a Pal VHS player?
2 Will the player video capture into the FCPHD 5.0 like normal NTSC footage?

Any help in directing me to the how tos of conversion and what equipment I need would be helpful

Yes, you’ll need to setup your FCP system for PAL and use a PAL deck and a PAL-based capture setting.
Then use Compressor to do the conversion.
To get a really good standards-conversion using Compressor will take considerable time.

    Well … almost …
And having waited an eternity for the conversion, you may find you don’t like the results and so, have to repeat the process.

    Technically, Compressor will do it.
Practically, it may drive you nuts.

You will need a PAL deck to capture PAL media into FCP. And yes, you will do it just like you did in NTSC.

Don’t bother with any other standards conversion methods other than Nattress Standards Converter plugin. It’s only $100 and the quality is astounding. You can read my review of it here…

Once converted, then output to an NTSC deck.

The other option is to put a hardware based standards converter between your PAL deck and your FCP capture system and capture as NTSC (or dub straight to an NTSC deck). This method is much faster but doesn’t give the best quality conversion when using consumer standards converters.

Amen to Nattress Standards Conversion plugins. I just went the other way from NTSC to PAL and the results were simply outstanding! On my G5 the export was about 5 and a half minutes for each minute of source.
