We use Streamload.com a lot for this, but we find their site very temperamental.
We find that it cannot be trusted for tight deadlines, but is ideal for ongoing download purposes.

With the greatest of respect, your experience is far from the truth.
Consider why there are organizations like SMPTE, EBU etc. These organizations develop standards – which users such as TV networks adopt – so that we all know exactly where we stand when producing masters, doing dubs, encoding etc. Reference tone at the head of a tape is exactly that – a reference. It is put there so that a user can set up a device (such as a VTR) and then play the program knowing they are listening to it as the maker intended.
If the makers of the program – and in this case, everyone involved in the audio process – do their jobs correctly, then their content will, as you said ““be heard clearly” and will ““not distort” once the reference tone is set correctly.
It most definitely is NOT a subjective thing.

Nice to know I’m not the only one who likes to adhere to Broadcast Standards when making broadcast masters.

correct if the Tone was at 0 to begin with – I often use imported Stereo tone … look, I don’t want to go right through my operational procedures for outputting broadcast material, here, suffice it to say, it’s nice to see your tone at exactly the right levels on your meters just as it is to see your program at the right level.

you MAY not have the correct codecs for those movies.
The new codecs don’t support older Avid QuickTimes …

when you export from FCP, try adding .mov to the name.
This MAY help Squeeze recognise the file for importing, without having to drag it in.
