Good Eats Question
Posted by Blub06 on April 1, 2006 at 7:03 pmI was watching this weeks episode of Good Eats (always an excellent show) and I saw somthing odd. At about 4 minutes in the host spins a wooden cooking tool, (I cant remember the name of it but you hold it with one hand and mix things with it) and when it spun there was an odd MPEG2 long GOP quality to it.
My question is, why?

April 1, 2006 at 7:11 pmNot sure which episode that was as they show each evening at 7pm, Wednesdays 10pm and various times on the weekend.
Might have been some compression issue with your local cable / satellite provider? I’m seeing all kinds of compression artifacts here now that I have HDTV service from Charter and using a Panasonic 50″ HDTV Plasma Display. Kind of disappointing when I’m paying for HDTV service, but I still see all kinds of compression artifacts in the shows.

April 1, 2006 at 7:32 pmDid you ever have dish or directv? It’s a pretty low CBR. In fact, I think they might give bigger networks bigger bandwidth. OLN used to look particularly poor, but then the shows I watched were full of handheld shots with moving action and trees. The artifacts on detail, movement and just plain dissolves was horrible. But in the end its more enjoyable than a degraded cable image.
When I first saw HD on dish I was amazed at how poor it actually was as well.

HDNet is the best looking channel here in HD along with ESPN.
The local CBS affiliate here in Atlanta decided to multicast four games at once during the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament. That resulted in four channels that looked like web-based MPEG-4 that was blown up to HD. Completely un-watchable here so we tuned it out.
As for SD, which is how Good Eats is broadcast right now, signals run the gamut from pretty clean to downright awful on our cable system. Discovery looks nice, Speed TV looks poor. Food Network runs the gamut from looking good for a while and then it will deteriorate for a few weeks for no apparent reason.

April 1, 2006 at 9:18 pmThe episode was about Sushi and the shot was AB looking at the camera with a pot on screen left and the wood paddle on the right. He spins the paddle and you get a kind of half field effect where on several alt frames you see a slightly transparent paddle head.

You get some of that because that particular episode was shot 24p so with fast motion you’ll get some cadence issues on the SD shows.
