I have had this exact same problem as well. One thing you have to make sure you are doing is using the “Make Movie” option instead of export. Hopefully this isn’t too contrived, but when I first started out with AE I was trying the export option, which was always lower quality for me. Like moldyboot was saying, you also have to fix some of the import settings in Avid. One more thing- Avid has a strange version of 16:9 (853×480 I think) and it helps to use that ratio in AE.

yeah, that’s the same one I posted. One thing you might want to try if you don’t want the beveled look is just making all the layers behind the first one a darker color of your choice to create that solid shadow effect.

Are there moving images on that site that I just couldn’t find, or are you simply talking about the stills at the top? Also, how do you know this was done in After Effects?
Well, if you did want to create something like this in AE, you should check out this tutorial:

This is something you can do without plugins, but if you are willing to buy a plugin try Zaxwerks.

Hey, I just finished shooting my first 16mm film yesterday! Thought that was cool that you are using the same medium. Well, for motion tracking, a quick search of this site for those very words should yield a lot of helpful results. I used motion tracking in AE 7 for the first time last week and it is amazing! Fast too! It tracks almost in real time, so it should be a bit faster than your manual tracking.

I don’t have Particular, but I have used Particle Playground before and it was very slow for me too. I think I had more particles than that, but they were square. I was also doing a very short clip with at least a GB of RAM and it took at least ten or fifteen minutes.

Check out Aharon’s tutorial on displacement maps. Also try searching the site or at least browsing through some of the tutorials before asking next time. This is a common problem that I’m sure you can find solutions to on this site. I don’t want to sound harsh, but if people keep posting FAQs on this forum it will be clogged with unnecesary posts.

This has nothing to do with the breaking motion, but for more realism you might consider separating the shadow and highlight on the balls into different layers so that when they roll the shadow doesn’t roll up to the top and vise versa.

Definitely shoot some video from the angle you want and you might even be able to motion track that footage using corner pinning. This should give you a pretty realistic motion (since it IS real). I like the idea of using the page turn effect as well.

What exactly will be reflected in the glass? If it’s just light you could just make the layers 3D and add some spotlights. If it’s some object you might want to look at Andrew Kramer’s tut on “creating 3D reflections.”

You can also check out Andrew Kramer’s tutorial on sky replacement or Aharon’s on cartoonification (the final one). Or just search the forum for motion tracking and read some of the threads.
