Hey, I just read about how to create a similar effect- an earthquake easing in and out- in the Cow magazine. It’s in the Dec06-Feb07 issue on page 30. Andrew Kramer explains it all very well. If you don’t have the magazine maybe ask Andrew to help you out.

Wow, that is really sweet! The black and white definitely helps the spooky effect and makes for easier special effects. Not that this looks at all easy! Does anyone else recognize those two little girls from The Shining?

Something to watch out for would be reflections in the glass of the tank. You may have to shoot at an angle to the glass (other than 90 degrees) and make sure the rest of the room is dark. I might try a white background if you are using black ink. A simple luma key should be good enough to remove the background. Green or blue might work too, but any green edges may look strange. I guess it depends on the background you intend to use in post.

No offense, but that movie looked retarded! It might be a funny idea for a 30 second commercial or something, but for a feature-length film sounds like a terrible idea!

What is also quite psychadellic (sp?) is just the plain fractal. I forget where exactly that is (maybe Generate: Fractal?), but you can get some really crazy-looking stuff with it without doing much. And you can zoom in on it almost forever, seeing more and more detail as you get closer. Play around with it and see what you like.

  • Well, I have no idea if there is or isn’t a magical tool that renames all your comps for you, but my guess is such a tool doesn’t exist. You might have to choose between two potentially time-saving techniques.
About the length, you might consider chopping it up at least a little. Maybe “cut” to a new project when little action is taking place or if there is a location change or something. I know I would be nervous to try and render out 6 minutes at once, especially if there were any render-intensive effects. But I suppose you could set the work area to a shorter amount and do it in increments. Good luck! Let me know what you end up doing and how it works for you (I wouldn’t mind seeing the final product either)!

  • Can you clarify some things? I’m not sure if I understand you correctly:
    1) Are the characters in different comps or different projects?
    2) In your final project are you using more than one of each character? If so, why?
    3) How long is the final product going to be (about)?

If it’s going to be a somewhat long animation you might consider breaking it up into scenes and cutting them together with video editing software. That’s what I’d do anyways.

You may be right that those squiggles are created in AE, but to me they look very much like the beginning/end of a reel of developed film. What I think it is is notes written on the film negative in black marker which becomes white when the film is printed. He probably took a digitized version of this and used the “add” blend mode. If you wanted to create your own you could probably just write a sentence with black marker on a white piece of paper, scan it, apply a negative effect to the colors, and overlay it on your video. You would also want to animate it moving up rapidly, maybe at 12fps and a lot of motion blur. Maybe add a wiggle expression as well to make it jittery.
P.S. I’ll have to side with Dave and iancorey- the vignette looks cheesy.

Are you referring to the expression called “wiggle?” If so, simply add an expression to the property you want to wiggle (option-click the stopwatch) and type: wiggle(A,B)
A is the number of times it wiggles per second and B is how much/far it moves (obviously you have to put in numeric values for A and B).

As far as I know the mesh is only fake 3D. You need the Zaxwerks plugin which allows you to create 3D text and other stuff right in AE. If you’re not willing to fork out the dough for that, however, take a look at these tutorials:
