I’m not sure what the E! effect looks like, but it may work something like the new tutorial Eran Stern did called “Tornado Text – Part 1”.
He created a mask path in Illustrator for the shape he wanted the text to move in (a spiral, in his case).
He imported the mask to After Effects and attached the text to the mask.
Then he enabled per-character 3D for the text, and then adjusted the mask in 3D space so the text spiraled up and around the actor.
I’m sure this could be adapted to what you need. I couldn’t find the tutorial on the COW, but it showed up on iTunes yesterday or the day before.

Thanks, Richard. Can you clear up two more questions for me:
1) When I set the in/out points, would that be in my viewer window (not the canvas)? So I would double-click on my footage, and then set in/out points in the top-middle window?
2) Once those points are set, FCP will only export what is selected by the in/out points? I thought it exported the entire timeline.

Thanks for the help guys. Darby, you were right. Once I changed the leading the paragraphs worked as they should. Now I’ll be deluged with Star Wars-style scrolling text intros to all my students’ movies.

Well the help file made it look like “Paragraph” text (as opposed to “Point” text) would behave like a paragraph in a word processor.

The text does not behave like the help file says it should.
The reason I ask is that a student of mine wants to do the Star Wars style text crawl at the start of his video. You wouldn’t type that in one line at a time, would you?

Dave,
The camera would be outside the house, looking at the window. The student would start inside the house and then come diving out of the window towards the camera, and the explosion would happen behind him (I think it would be coming from inside the house and then blowing out through the window).
Given that info, what route would you take?

The movement is done with a 3D camera. You can find lots of tutorials on how to do that at videocopilot.net.

This is an interesting post and it makes me wonder if there are ways to make AE pull data from a file for dynamic changes to projects. Can AE interract with data files in any way?
For example, could you have a text file with dates and corresponding quotes that AE could read and update the project with? That way you could just re-render your project each day and it would have different text.
If AE can’t do that…shouldn’t they add that as a feature? Seems like you guys in the industry would need that sort of function.

If you need to randomly change the opacity level every few frames, use the wiggle expression.
Alt-Click on your opacity stop watch, then type:
wiggle(frequency, amount)
Example:
wiggle(12, 5) – this would modify the opacity 12 times per second, by five units each time. So if your opacity is set to 50%, this expression would adjust your opacity from 45 – 55 percent, twelve times each second.
