“care to share what sparks your neurons?”

Demo Reels, anykind, any where and trade magazines. I collect Demo reels and the URL of demo reels on line. Each time I am sitting in corporate America lobby waiting to talk to the Big Cheese I will collect the free Magazine subscription Bingo Cards from the trade mags in the lobby. I have over 80 FREE trade magazines in my mail box every month. These Mags are a great free resource for graphic ideas. The editors and graphic artists of these mags are in the same fight we are to grab eye balls and illustrate a concept or thought.

May 25, 2007 at 12:58 am in reply to: one more: dvd recorders?

My JVC DVD recorder with VHS player/recorder, I would not recomend. Yes it is three + years old and was about $225 when purchased. The DVD recorder / player is now dead. It worked great for three years, but no more. I don’t know the life span on other machines, but I am not impressed with three years. I could firewire from the DSR40 or Final Cut Pro. It was great for time code window dubs. Not the prettiest encode, but very usable.

May 24, 2007 at 12:48 am in reply to: setting for beta sp 16×9 anamorphic SD

    Yes,

You can shoot 16X9 Betacam SP. My Sony DXC35wsl has the extra wide 2/3 chips for it and it is just a push of a button when you power up. The camera crops the edges of the chip for standard 4×3. It is anamorphic. The DXC35wsl can be attached to the PVV3 Betacam SP VTR or the DSR1 DVcam VTR back. I have both backs and switch them out often, usually when I need a tape format longer than 30 minutes or when I am having to lower my bid to match the 1/3 and 1/4 chip DV jocky’s out there. My main Corporate and Broadcast clients demand Betacam SP camera tapes for their broadcast and VIP video. They like the saturated colors.

I have yet to have the request for 16×9 Betacam SP, but I am ready. I have the UVW 1800 (x2) also.

I hope to shoot some 16X9 Betacam SP this summer and then import and up-rez it into a DVCpro HD Timeline just for the comparison. My objective is to compare it with HDV and the new $20K HD cameras from Sony and Panasonic. It would be great if this would buy me another year or two from having to purchase a true HD camera and VTR. Considering all the compression in HDV, HDcam and DVCpro HD I am anticipating a close call. 🙂

Go for it. Make it look pretty. Make sure your camera tape coming out of the 1800 has been set to a scope. Use the TBC in the 1800 to make it pretty so you only have to tweak in FCP.

    Walter,

If Compressor will compress HD, would a third party software like Roxio which claims to be able to burn Blue Ray do the rest?

My eye is on Blue Ray DVD also. I have seen Blue ray burners in the 700 to 800 dollar range and dropping by the month.

I spent 4 months chasing a problem just like yours, but my machine (dual gig) would just lock up. I reloaded software 3 to 4 times onto fresh drives..

But it seems to be the mother board battery that was causing all the freaky problems. THe computer is 3+ years old and the battery was original. $10 bucks latter with a new mother board battery, everything has been very stable for 3 weeks.

April 19, 2007 at 1:52 am in reply to: Apple’s Color, my thoughts

And I actually am more amazed to hear this from Walter, than what I have read in this thread.

This is like me trying to defend the value of 2/3′ Betacam Sp to the 1/4″ dv jockies. Why..

It is all hamburger and ya get em for a buck down the street. Ya want steak done right give me a call..

It just seems that if you wait long enough, the true measure of a guy is usually uttered as some profane truth…

I applaud Apple, Hurray… and I will have to buy a new machine to load FCP6 according to its’ specs. So Apple gets me for another $5,500 bucks,,, big deal….

The rest of you, go buy yourself some real bragging rights, the exspensive, fancy clothes, the glossy rollex, the painful stuff, I thing thy name is Avid… I know a lot of Avid shops that can’t edit … so you should have in, being trained in FCP… go for the golden ring…

April 19, 2007 at 1:30 am in reply to: Major Problems… help?

I have been having issues also with FCP just locking up if I leave the desk for 10 minutes.
I trashed and trashed preferences, I thought it was a Bias trial that expired, I restriped, reloaded just OS 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4 (I think) All the latest updates.. And it is still locking up solid. Only a reboot will get it working again and of cours you loose any un-saved work.

It might be my Cinewave codecs, I hope not. Or it might be my Ram I have 1.5 gigs in a Dual gig G4.

So is there a program to test for fried ram? I would hate to buy new ram for an old machine just to find out I didn’t need it… And as the new Specs for FCP6 state, I ain’t going to use it for the upgrade. I just need a couple more months before I open the vein for the Octo core.

    Any ram solutions?

Walter, now that you upgraded, check out my jitter problem.. Squeeze a DV video down over a color matte in a 8 bit yuv targa timeline. Add a big feathered edge and drop shadow to the dv squeeezed image after rendering does the outer edge of the dv footage jitter on your ntsc monitor??

Peter, remind to say something nice about you.. Your pointer to https://www.joomla.org/ might just be an answer that I have been looking for. I have three web sites, two that have yet to be built and one that needs a lot of help… How much of joomla have you explored and tested? I need an email app that can help me email business emails with graphics and video enbedded and I ain’t an html guy. Will joomla help with this or is it still really html code warrior only type app.

thanks for the pointers… Your post here on FCP are always illuminating…. but not as much fun as the exploits of our friend Wally and his famous ‘Wally Drop Test” I did hear from a friend that his certified Apple FCP trainer dumped a cup of coffee on his new 17″ Macbook Pro, probably to test for software leaks, (would this qualify as a Wally test) but this guy doesn’t admit to ever reading or sharing on the Cow.. I appreciate that you do..

    thanks
