Compressor will definitely take advantage of as many as you have now… You can actually send an instance of your compression job to each of the 8 in an octo…

People have been touting that feature as multi-core aware, but that only helps when you have 8 movies to compress. But what if I only have one movie to compress? Doesn’t sound like all 8 cores will kick in to help compress one single movie….right?

You weren’t at NAB were you? Jerry is talking about ONE job being fed out to all 8 cores. That’s the demo they were showing at NAB so yes, all 8 cores will kick in on ONE single file.

[chrispy] “I could have missed this at NAB but does FCP6 support all the CPU cores during rendering, especially with the new 8 cores Mac Pro ?”

As far as I could tell, Apple was silent on this and only showed Compressor taking advantage of all 8 cores. My guess is that this may show up with Leopard whenever that ships.

Jerry, what’s the deal with the instances then?

I have to manually activate each instances? How? Via a menu option? Open up Compressor twice or 4 or 8 times?

Just look at the manual when you get it. I believe the demo artist just created 7 aliases of Compressor for each core and away it went.

The demo at NAB showed ONE sequence being sent to all 8 processors… Apple showed this being compressed to H.264… it was 3 times speed. i.e. a 9 minute sequence would compress in 3 minutes… I’m sure too if you have only 4 the same thing can happen, however at half the speed or so…

I don’t think so… it works NOW… (remember that dashboard speed thingy? it was way cool too…there’s a command you can pull up … I just missed where this is, but Compressor 3 doesn’t have that many menus etc… look there and I’ll wager you’ll find it. or open the manual…? I’d do it, but have to wait just a few days before I can.
