I posted a couple of days ago, eventually coming to the conclusion I should just reformat the drive and re-install everything, so… (excuse the long post, I’ll try to cut to the quick whenever possible)

Dual 1.25 MDD, 10.4.8, FCP 5.1.4, Atto UL3D, Huge 1.2 TB array, Decklink (SDI only) In January I got my upgrade to FCP Studio, installed a second internal drive (kept everything as is on the original), installed Decklink card, went to 10.4, QT 7, and 5.1.2. “Velly Nice… Great Success”

Tuesday AM I was working on two projects in FCP, opened up a project from a couple weeks ago, went to audio/video settings to change the dig settings, and got the spinning beach ball. Shut down re-boot etc, threw out preferences a couple of times, and then FCP would not open. It would hang on the splash screen usually after loading audio filters.Reinstalled FCP, did the updates, same story. OK says I, back up the data on the internal HD, erase it, and start all over again – with the same results. Uh right, take out original system drive, erase, installed just FCP, and it seemed to be fine. Since I had run down to Best Buy to get another drive (in case that was the problem) I opened it back up, installed the second hard, yaddy yadda… opened up my project, went to audo video settings, deja’ vu all over again. OK, take that drive back out, same result, Put that drive back in (now I’m on a brand new 250 gb drive with nothiing on it), by itself, erase, re-install OS and FCP, install all the various drivers (as before). FCP stalls on the splash screen. To quote the bulldog from one of my favorite cartoons “Dis just don’t add up!” What is going on here? And yes, I am listening to the universe, I am going to do the Big Upgrade I was putting off till 4th quarter, but what could be causing all this woe?

    Thanks,

    John

Sounds to me it’s hardware related. The one that comes to mine is that you may have partially burnt up a stick of ram….it does happen. Individually swap out sticks and see if that helps.

Trash preferences through your finder. Also be sure that your System drive is not handling your data storage requirements. Keep your system drive as empty as possible and everything will work better. But you probably already know all that.

I have been having issues also with FCP just locking up if I leave the desk for 10 minutes.
I trashed and trashed preferences, I thought it was a Bias trial that expired, I restriped, reloaded just OS 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4 (I think) All the latest updates.. And it is still locking up solid. Only a reboot will get it working again and of cours you loose any un-saved work.

It might be my Cinewave codecs, I hope not. Or it might be my Ram I have 1.5 gigs in a Dual gig G4.

So is there a program to test for fried ram? I would hate to buy new ram for an old machine just to find out I didn’t need it… And as the new Specs for FCP6 state, I ain’t going to use it for the upgrade. I just need a couple more months before I open the vein for the Octo core.

    Any ram solutions?
