HDV to Blue-ray
Posted by Mark Dannunzio on May 23, 2007 at 11:51 amHello,
I was wondering if someone could help me. I tried the HDV forum but had no luck.
Is there anyway to create an HDV Blue-ray DVD using Final Cut Studio 1 or 2? (Does FCP Studio only offer HD DVD?)
Also I would need a Blue-ray player to playback right? Thanks

Adobe Encore CS3 does support Blu Ray DVD and that is coming out in June / July as part of Premiere CS3. We’re actually going to have to purchase this for a Blu Ray DVD project here. Yes, you need a Blu Ray player. Our investment to create the first disc (burner, Premiere, player) is going to be around $3,000 so it’s not cheap.
Really silly because Apple is a member of the Blu Ray consortium since March 2005, but they don’t support authoring in DVD Studio Pro 4.

May 23, 2007 at 1:14 pmI was disappointed to see DVDSP stay at version 4. I had high expectations based the big steps Apple took with the rest of the suite.
It’s hard to guess from outside whether there just weren’t enough software engineers to go around or if they decided to wait and see who won (even though Apple is a blu-ray member). Presumably the next version would have some features to let non-programmers take advantage of some of the advanced features in either format. I know I don’t know java or javascript. I still think Apple has their own competitor in the works that isn’t disc based, but I’m wrong a lot so who knows.
$3000 isn’t cheap, but it’s less than I’d have thought. We won’t be doing high-def discs for a long while, but I’ll have to check out that software.
Sorry for the rant, but I’m rendering, so I have a little time on my hands,

May 23, 2007 at 1:27 pmWalter,
If Compressor will compress HD, would a third party software like Roxio which claims to be able to burn Blue Ray do the rest?
My eye is on Blue Ray DVD also. I have seen Blue ray burners in the 700 to 800 dollar range and dropping by the month.

May 23, 2007 at 1:40 pmi have a stinking suspicion that hd-dvd is going to prevail. what is the last (consumer) format sony kinda won win, 8mm videotape? beta failed, the little discs for the psp failed. plus I heard a rumor sony isn’t allowing porn to be sold in stores on blue ray…so, that’ll make it fail then and there.
anyway, thats my hunch. I’m not going to throw in unless a client wants to pay for it, until then, im going to just wait for the battle to be waged.
i think the cheapest blu ray and hd dvd players are the xbox 360 and the ps3.

May 23, 2007 at 2:13 pmAs a cheaper option, Walter. Have you looked into Roxio’s Toast? It can burn Blu-Ray DVDs. I’m not sure about authoring but if it does, it sure would be cheaper.

I’m pretty sure it burns data-only blu-ray discs. That’s using the blu-ray as storage only, without the “hooks” needed for a blu-ray player to play video straight off the disk.

For Data discs, you can do that right now. There is a Blue Ray burner for $699 that comes with Toast 8 which can burn data Blue Ray discs.

May 23, 2007 at 6:46 pmFWIW According to the new Compressor manual, you can burn H.264 HD onto a standard DVD5 disk that will give you 90 min. that will play on the newer HD DVD players.

May 23, 2007 at 7:43 pmI’ve already been doing this before the FCS2 upgrade. Only problem is that I can only play these on the Mac since I don’t have a HD-DVD player yet.
