  • FCP 5.1 or 5.1.4 won’t open on my 1.42 G4

I have a dual 1.42 power pc G4 running 10.4.9 and we’ve been running FCP 4.5 for a while and recently crossgraded to 5.1 universal to support Panasonic P2. I also tried updating to 5.1.4, but resulted in the same crashes.
It won’t even open FCP 5.1 without crashing. I click on it and it goes through the motions, then just disappears. I have this same problem on my personal dual 867 G4 at home. I’m up to date on all apples pro application support downloads and everything else from apple that looks pro application related. We’re using Quicktime Pro version 7.1.6 if that makes any difference.
Does anyone have a clue what is going on and why my new crossgrade is virtually useless?

    Thanks,

    Ben

Did you do a clean install or just update your existing system?

I tried both methods. I upgraded from 4.5 to 5.1, that didn’t work. Then 5.1 to 5.1.4 and that didn’t work.
Then I uninstalled everything and just installed 5.1, that didn’t work. Then upgraded to 5.1.4 and that didn’t work either.
It goes through the motions like it is opening and then it just goes back to the finder and poof, no FCP.

The same happened to me and I realize that it was a demo of Shake that I had downloaded. Once I trashed all Shake related files, it opened fine. It probably has nothing to do with your problem but just thought I would throw it out there.

I spent 4 months chasing a problem just like yours, but my machine (dual gig) would just lock up. I reloaded software 3 to 4 times onto fresh drives..

But it seems to be the mother board battery that was causing all the freaky problems. THe computer is 3+ years old and the battery was original. $10 bucks latter with a new mother board battery, everything has been very stable for 3 weeks.

I did have a shake trial version on the computer, but I trashed everything seemingly related, rebooted, reinstalled everything and still no success.
I’ll check the battery, but don’t think that’s it because everything else is working fine.
Any other input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Like I said FCP 4.5 works perfectly, but 5.1 won’t even open.

What kind of Graphics card is there? AGP or other?

It’s the original Radeon 9000 Pro with 64mb of ram. It is AGP.

Yeah, that should work and your procs are fast enough.

I assume you trashed your prefs? Anything else hooked to your mac? What kind of drives are connected? Have you tried disconnecting those and then launching? Are you opening an old project or starting anew?

I’m also running media100 version 8.2.3 on this computer and it’s connected to two striped raids. Could it have something to do with media from both edit systems being used on the same raid arrays?
I left this out earlier because I didn’t want to compound the issue, but 5.1.4 was actually working for about 15 minutes and we were importing some p2 and then it just closed, didn’t give any errors and wouldn’t open again. I guess I pissed it off.
    thanksk for your help

How do you mantain your system? Do you run Diskwarrior or Techtools?
I run FC 5.1.2 in my old TiBook G$ 667 (with the last MacOX and QT) without any problem.
