i am about to buy a dvd recorder to give me the ability to record straight to a dvd from the timeline (using kona), any recommendations?

one with a hard drive i assume would be very useful.

I picked up a Panasonic DVD recorder at BestBuy for this very purpose. No hard drive, just put in a disc, hit play on your timeline and record on the machine. Very easy.

    Walter,

How do you have it wired? What inputs?

I do the same as Walter. Only drawbacks are recording in real time, so a 30 minute program takes 30 minutes, which is 30 minutes you can’t be editing something else. The other is the menu. No fancy menus on these recorders, thus I mostly use it as a quick way to burn rough edits for review by the client. I build the DVD proper in DSP after final approval. Oh, and I’ve had a few instances where the burned discs wouldn’t play in the clients machine, but it seems the newer the playback machine, the better the chance.

As for wiring on mine I’m coming out via firewire into the front of the deck – it’s got DV in. I can’t capture from it though, it’s only one way. Your card may give you other options.

    Thanks Mike,

That’s good to know, the ones I tried in the past would not work using firewire out of FCP.

My JVC DVD recorder with VHS player/recorder, I would not recomend. Yes it is three + years old and was about $225 when purchased. The DVD recorder / player is now dead. It worked great for three years, but no more. I don’t know the life span on other machines, but I am not impressed with three years. I could firewire from the DSR40 or Final Cut Pro. It was great for time code window dubs. Not the prettiest encode, but very usable.

Just an FYI that 99% of the time that can be fixed by simply
making a copy of the disc. It strips away what ever that extra layer of incompatability is.

I have always put very high regards to the Panasonic line of DVD Recorders and recommend them to any professional here.

To this day they have the best picture quality and reliability of operation.

I have had mine since August 2001 (DMR-E30 model)its got
over 2,100 hours on the laser diode and I still use it every week.
    Great Machine.

Composite out of the Kona 3, RCA Audio out of the Kona 3, directly into the DVD Recorder.

I have to switch the cable on the front of the Kona to go from the component feed out to my system to composite.

[walter biscardi] “Composite out of the Kona”

That’s what I’d like to avoid if possible. Firewire would be so cool if they still enable it. I fear the MPAA has forced them to disable firewire capability.

BTW, my FCS2 just arrived. I’m opening the box now and installing immediately. Oh what fun…

Which takes a LOT less time than authoring a DVD.

Exactly, that’s primarily what we use it for. But again, much faster than authoring a DVD.

Another use for the unit is Window Burn copies of tapes. We’re doing a project right now where will be burning about 200 tapes to DVD with window burn for a library archive. This is a great way to store the footage and be able to access it without using the original recordings.

[Michael Lynch] “Oh, and I’ve had a few instances where the burned discs wouldn’t play in the clients machine, but it seems the newer the playback machine, the better the chance.”

Knock on wood, we have not run into that yet with our original Philips and now the Panasonic DVD recorder.
