He did say, ” video clip that can be read on any PC”

So I agree Walter that Flip4Mac is cool software,,, but why not encode it to mpg1,, is WMV totaly mpg1 compliant, I have clients still using 2000 era PC’s… I know Mpeg1 is PC compliant back to dirty old DOS… How far back is WMV usable? WMV9 is not to ugly done right.

Tom, My iDVD problems were usually jitter edges on boxes that were moving left to right and it looks like an interlace problem… The jitter I never had before. I would export 8, 10 bit YUV and non compressed from FCP and have the same problems. I liked iDVD for how quick it was to use and had great results until lately.. I am just trying to encourage bentramer to take the plunge to DVD stuudio Pro which is a lot more complicated to put it mildly. But trouble free for me so far.

Yes, ask Atto, they are great people. And when you find the answer, I also would like to know.
It would be great to find a new life for my UL3d card.

I have had issues with iDvd ever since I upgraded to FCP 5.1 and iDVD 6 (6 I think is right). For the last three + years I have always used iDVD for client check copies cause it was easy and quick. But not any more, too many unexplainable problems… So I have had to learn FCP DVD Studio Pro. Much more complicated, but no problems getting a pretty DVD except it takes longer.

I use a Cinewave Card on a dual gig Mac. So some of the problem might be lack of new Cinewave drivers. Or iDVD just doesn’t play nice with 8bit YUV any more.

And I was quick with iDVD.

What ever the client wants to call it..

As I tell my clients, I will respond to any terminology they use as long as their cash downpayment of 80% to 100% is in my bank account…. :-0

August 10, 2007 at 2:48 pm in reply to: what would YOU do

I have witnessed a very good friend learn Final Cut against all odds. This guy retired from a state video job after 30 years. At his state job he had completed Avid training certification but was still befuddled by Avid, so his younger assistants did all the Avid based editing. The most this guy could get his PC to do was email and internet Poker. (don’t we all wish we had a state job) He retired from his state job and got a job at a legal organization doing video. He completed Final Cut Pro training and has been editing ever since on the Mac. If this anti computer guy can learn Final Cut Pro, so can your grandfather or a five year old toddler or you..

Just do yourself a favor when putting together your Edit system, don’t cheap out on the pieces. Get a good monitor, get plenty of good ram, get a good desk and get a qualified raid ( I prefer external, love my Medea) From your background you will probably be back editing in less than 48 hours after set up.(someday I might even read the manual) And then you will be kicking yourself (or you can watch your boss kick himself) for not having changed over earlier. Don’t wait any longer. Just do it.

June 28, 2007 at 7:58 pm in reply to: Beta SP tape age

I have been making money out of rust since the late ’80s. Betacam and Betacam SP tapes are rated around 50 years if my 20 year old research still holds true. Remember the tapes are “getting brittle”, we all do. So double check the machine you are playing it in. Betacam series decks do get out of adjustment and can snap tapes. Old tapes do neccesitate head cleaning.

I exercise the decks. Take an old tape and run it thru the deck. Slowly at first and gradually up to full throttle. If the deck is warm and did not trash the work out tape, those betacams will last a long long time. And with proper TBC adjustment look beeeeea….uuuutiful…..

I just had my old AB roll system retimed, including new heads on my UVW 1800. It was so pretty that I re-digitized the current Betacam camera tapes for the final edit on my Cinewave.

It is a really tough decision, isn’t the iPhone about the same price of the new FCP upgrade?

    Which one should I get???

    .Mac

You can’t get much better than dot Mac. It is just $99 a year ($89 at Micro Center) It starts with a Gig of space and you buy more as needed. It is a little confusing at first but it works.

A local University (Big, Big) was supposed to put my College of Ed clients video on their web site/server for download. They got IT guys by the herd and they have yet to do it. So I got tired of waiting, got a dot Mac account and had a URL address for the video download on my clients desktop Monday morning. It was a long weekend but I got it done. And it is pretty cool when your client shares the applause from his bosses who he forwarded the url to.

You just have to remember that older PC’s (windows) is not as friendly with pictures and video and large downloads as Macs are. Something about viruses and Trojan horses… 🙂
